About Michael

I offer one-on-one personalized tutoring services in a variety of subjects for junior high, high school, college, and adult students throughout South Charlotte and neighboring locales.

I'm a licensed physical therapist with a Master of Science degree from the University of Connecticut. My career path required extensive academic and intellectual training in biology, anatomy, physiology, mathematics, and writing. I excelled during my years at UConn, achieving a GPA over 3.9 on a four-point scale. I was also Salutatorian of my high school's graduating Class of 1996. I am a member of Mensa, a reputable society of high-IQ individuals. My experience includes providing academic tutoring services to NCAA Division-I athletes.

Unlike many high-IQ individuals, who tend to be highly-introverted, I have a zeal and penchant for teaching. Many people are aware of the fact that "being smart", by itself, doesn't make one a quality teacher or tutor. Finding a tutor who is both an exceptional learner AND exceptional teacher is a rarity, and that's exactly what I bring to the table.

When you hire a tutor, it is my opinion that you should seek one who approaches academics from a different angle... something different from the standard instruction that students typically receive in a classroom setting. My teaching philosophy is different from, but complementary to, traditional school teachers' philosophy. While I do include content instruction to students, I also strive to focus on laying the foundation for quality study habits and work ethic, and then help each student to build his/her tower of knowledge upon said foundation. In other words, while I can help a student "cram" for a specific test or topic material, I'm also adept at fostering a desire for learning. I believe the latter is far more important and useful than the former, and I encourage each student to seek a path of life-long learning.

I pride myself on being able to connect with all ages, levels, and types of students. Some students need to increase their knowledge base. Some students need to improve study habits. Some students need to improve their organizational skills. Some students need to improve test-taking skills. Some students need help with all of the above! Each of these potential "problem areas" deserves the tutor's attention, and when you work with me, I absolutely will assess all of these, and conduct your tutoring sessions with a focus on your greatest need or needs.

Whether you or your child is an overachiever seeking more challenge, or an underachiever needing assistance with studies, I can be your guide to academic success.

Thank you for reading, and I look forward to meeting you soon!

-- ** UPDATE 4/30/15 ** --
I am fielding inquiries for tutoring during the Summer months at this time. June and July offer great opportunities for students to solidify academic material learned during the previous year that will be necessary to remember and utilize during the upcoming Fall semester. This is especially crucial for mathematics courses. The summer months also offer the student time to focus on standardized test preparation, such as the SAT and ACT exams, among others. Contact me by email here at WyzAnt today!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The ACT is a fast-paced, challenging test of aptitude for academics. In order to succeed on the English section of the exam, you need to be well-versed in English Grammar, Vocabulary, Sentence Structure, and Reading Comprehension. I can be your guide to success in all of these areas.

ACT Math

The ACT is a fast-paced, challenging test of aptitude for academics. In order to succeed on the Math section of the exam, you need to be well-versed in Number Sense, Operations, Fractions, Algebra (I and II), Geometry, and basic Trigonometry. I can be your guide to success in all of these areas.

ACT Science

The ACT is a fast-paced, challenging test of aptitude for academics. In order to succeed on the Science section of the exam, you need to be very strong in Reading Comprehension, and be able to readily interpret data presented in the form of graphs, tables, and charts. You'll also need to have an understanding of the Scientific Method, be able to compare and contrast data, be able to compare written scientific opinion papers, and be able to extrapolate data to other similar situations.
This surprises a lot of students who take the ACT Science exam ... one might be expecting a test of his/her knowledge of Cell Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. While knowledge in those subjects is helpful, this is ultimately a Reading Comprehension test with a science "spin" or "twist".
Don't be unprepared for the ACT! Let me be your guide to success.

Algebra 1

I'm prepared to assist the student with graphing, order of operations, linear equations, word problems, quadratic equations, probabilities, ratios, percents, factoring, inequalities, medians, means, and other similar and/or related math skills, typically covered in High School and College undergraduate Algebra I courses.

Algebra 2

I'm ready to assist you with challenging topics from your Algebra II course: Logarithms, Conic Sections, Functions, Systems of Equations, Sequences, Matrices, Sets, Combinations, and Permutations.

Anatomy

I'm a licensed Physical Therapist, with a complete background in human anatomy, including human cadaver lab.

ASVAB

The components of the ASVAB include Arithmetic, Science, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, and Spatial Abilities. I am qualified to provide tutoring on any or all of these topics/subjects, and I will help you prepare for formalized test-taking scenarios.

Biology

I'm a licensed physical therapist, with a full background in AP high school and college undergraduate biology and labs.

Chemistry

I passed High School and College Undergraduate Chemistry I and II (with labs), all with high A's.

Elementary Math

Number sense, Fractions and Decimals, Basic Geometry, Multiplication and Division Tables, and much more! I'm prepared to help your child master the fundamentals of mathematics ... which will be crucial for his/her academic success as s/he gets older.

Elementary Science

Human body systems, geology, weather, basic astronomy, ecosystems ... I can help the student with a focused study of any of these topics, or give an overview of all of them.

English

I am proficient in vocabulary, grammar, spelling, writing, proofreading, reading comprehension, and word analogies.

Fitness

I'm a licensed physical therapist with background training in exercise physiology, physical fitness, sports psychology, and wellness management. I frequently and routinely instruct and educate patients and peers about the benefits of physical fitness, and can instruct you on methods to improve your flexibility, agility, and cardiovascular endurance.

GED

To succeed on the GED, you need a strong knowledge base in English Grammar, Essay/Paragraph Construction, English Literature, History, Geography, Science, Mathematics, Algebra, and Geometry. Let me be your guide to greater knowledge in some or all of these subject areas!

Geometry

I am proficient in everything from basic elementary geometry through high school geometry proofs.

Grammar

I can help with parts of speech, verb tenses, sentence types, contractions, commonly misused English words, etc.

ISEE

The ISEE test contains multiple-choice questions involving Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, and Reasoning Skills. To succeed on the ISEE, one must have a strong knowledge-base in these areas, and one also must know the best strategies for managing timed multiple-choice exams. I can assist you with both! Several of my students have credited their ISEE success to a better understanding of test strategies and the topics tested. Let me be your guide to better, more focused preparation for this challenging exam!

Nursing

As a licensed physical therapist, I've worked with hundreds of RNs, LPNs, and CNAs in professional settings ranging from ICU to Nursing Homes to Home Healthcare. Many of the courses required to become a nurse overlap, or are similar to, a physical therapist's educational path.

Nutrition

I'm a licensed physical therapist with an educational background in human physiology, wellness management, exercise prescription, and pathology. I can provide you with sound advice and strategies for studying these topics, which are all crucial to a thorough understanding of nutrition.

Pharmacology

I'm a licensed physical therapist with a background in basic didactic training and practical experience with pharmacology. I would not be an appropriate tutor for a full-fledged Graduate program student in Pharmacy. However, I would be qualified to assist Allied Health students and Pre-Pharmacy Undergrads with certain courses related to Pharmacology.

Physical Science

Experience in High School AP Physics courses, High School Earth Science classes, basic undergraduate Physics with Lab, and Kinesiology.

Physics

I'm prepared to assist high school students and introductory-level college undergraduate students with the basics of physics: calculations involving velocity, mass, acceleration, gravitational acceleration, force, momentum, power, work, density, frequency, wavelength, enthalpy, pressure, volume, temperature, etc.

Physiology

I'm a licensed physical therapist, with extensive educational training in Human Physiology. It's a complex subject that many students struggle with, and I can provide the needed study skills and assist with the comprehension required to help the student succeed.

Praxis

The components of the "Praxis I" test include Mathematics, Reading Comprehension, and Writing Skills. I am qualified to provide tutoring on any or all of these topics/subjects, and more. Plus, I will help you prepare for formalized test-taking scenarios.

Prealgebra

Math skills beyond arithmetic. Generally "pre-algebra" courses are offered to middle school, junior high, and high school students. Skills learned in "pre-algebra" are useful for taking college entrance exams. These math skills are also crucial for application to life, such as understanding fractions, percentages, averages, statistics, equations, etc.

Proofreading

Need help proofreading your essays, papers, or journals? I can help you out. I'm an expert with sentence structure. I can help you eliminate passive voice in your writing. I'll help you to identify commonly misused words. I can also assist you with eliminating "run-on" sentences. When I proofread your writing, it will be more fluid and more readable. Your papers will be less vulnerable to the red correction pens of nitpicky teachers and professors.

SAT Math

Two of the greatest challenges of the SAT Math tests are dealing with extraneous information, and managing your pace. In order to be successful, one must not only be "good at math", but also be very adept at managing his/her time and focus in an intimidating timed standardized testing environment. Allow me to help you prepare for this challenge; I'll help you improve your mathematical skills, but also help you become a better "test-taker". In my experience, the test-taking skills are almost as important as the fundamental math skills, when taking the SAT I.

Spanish

I completed Spanish I, II, III, and IV with high marks during my middle school and high school years. I am not fluent in speaking Spanish, but I am more than capable of teaching the basics to Spanish I and II students in Grades 7 through 12, or introductory Spanish for college undergraduates.

Study Skills

My experiences include leading peer study group sessions and also tutoring NCAA Division-I athletes on how to prepare better class notes for study, how to utilize study time more efficiently, and how to prioritize information that is most likely to be included on quizzes or tests.

I can provide the student with advice and instruction for organizational skills, optimizing your studying environment, class note-taking skills, scheduling your study time, and test-taking skills.

TEAS

I am a licensed Physical Therapist with a Master of Science degree from the University of Connecticut. I have assisted multiple prospective nursing students in preparation for their TEAS exam. The TEAS exam prominently features Mathematics, English Grammar, and Biological Science content, in a multiple-choice format. I am prepared to assist you with review and/or instruction in all of those content areas, and I will also provide you with tactics to improve your performance specifically on multiple-choice-format tests.

Trigonometry

I will teach you the basics of trigonometry, including angles, functions, reciprocals, identities, and laws. I was an "A" student in trigonometry as a sophomore in high school; most of my classmates in that class were juniors and seniors. I'm prepared to share my knowledge and "tricks" with you, to help boost your grades and scores in this challenging subject.

Vocabulary

I'm a member of Mensa, an international community of tested high-IQ individuals. Vocabulary is second nature to me. I love to help students discover, define, and use new words.

Writing

My writing resume includes everything from middle school "book reports" and "creative writing" up through graduate school research proposal papers and patient case studies.
