University of Connecticut (Physical Therapy)
The University of Connecticut (Master's)
I offer one-on-one personalized tutoring services in a variety of subjects for junior high, high school, college, and adult students throughout South Charlotte and neighboring locales.
I'm a licensed physical therapist with a Master of Science degree from the University of Connecticut. My career path required extensive academic and intellectual training in biology, anatomy, physiology, mathematics, and writing. I excelled during my years at UConn, achieving a GPA over 3.9 on a four-point scale. I was also Salutatorian of my high school's graduating Class of 1996. I am a member of Mensa, a reputable society of high-IQ individuals. My experience includes providing academic tutoring services to NCAA Division-I athletes.
Unlike many high-IQ individuals, who tend to be highly-introverted, I have a zeal and penchant for teaching. Many people are aware of the fact that "being smart", by itself, doesn't make one a quality teacher or tutor. Finding a tutor who is both an exceptional learner AND exceptional teacher is a rarity, and that's exactly what I bring to the table.
When you hire a tutor, it is my opinion that you should seek one who approaches academics from a different angle... something different from the standard instruction that students typically receive in a classroom setting. My teaching philosophy is different from, but complementary to, traditional school teachers' philosophy. While I do include content instruction to students, I also strive to focus on laying the foundation for quality study habits and work ethic, and then help each student to build his/her tower of knowledge upon said foundation. In other words, while I can help a student "cram" for a specific test or topic material, I'm also adept at fostering a desire for learning. I believe the latter is far more important and useful than the former, and I encourage each student to seek a path of life-long learning.
I pride myself on being able to connect with all ages, levels, and types of students. Some students need to increase their knowledge base. Some students need to improve study habits. Some students need to improve their organizational skills. Some students need to improve test-taking skills. Some students need help with all of the above! Each of these potential "problem areas" deserves the tutor's attention, and when you work with me, I absolutely will assess all of these, and conduct your tutoring sessions with a focus on your greatest need or needs.
Whether you or your child is an overachiever seeking more challenge, or an underachiever needing assistance with studies, I can be your guide to academic success.
Thank you for reading, and I look forward to meeting you soon!

Fee may be lowered in some circumstances. Examples include students who live near my home, and students who have very frequent sessions. We can discuss your situation if it warrants a special rate.
Michael is extremely knowledgeable and is able to teach the subject matter in an easy-to understand manner. He comes prepared to each tutoring session with a lesson plan, based on my daughter's needs for that tutorial time. So far, he has helped my daughter review material for two advanced high school classes. I would not hesitate to call upon him again for tutoring services for either my high school student, or middle-schooler.
Thank you very much! I'm humbled by your exceptional praise.
After one session I felt like I could take my upcoming test that minute. Great confidence builder. Would highly recommend him.
Michael has made a tremendous difference in my son's outlook on Geometry in just a few lessons. He is always prepared, but always ready to go with whatever my son needs most. My kid looks forward to going over the material with Michael - and is now excited (well, almost!) about math! In addition, his grade has gone up significantly. Michael's communication is also great! Can't recommend him enough.
Michael is a great tutor. He is very professional and takes his job seriously. He comes prepared for every session, doesn't waste any time, and puts a lot of effort into his written summaries (very informative for parents). Michael has impressed us with his ability to quickly recognize student's strengths and weaknesses and his observations and suggestions have been extremely helpful. He is a serious tutor who expects nothing less from his students.
Glad that my daughter is working my Michael again! It reassures me that my daughter is in good hands.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and detailed praise! I'm thrilled to hear that you're finding lots of value in my math tutoring!
I have been out of school for quite some time and was very nervous to take the TEAS to get into nursing school. Michael was very helpful. Not only does he have expert knowledge of the subjects on the test, but he is also familiar with the makeup of the test and can break it down for you, helping you know what to concentrate on. Michael is also very prepared. He had examples and worksheets on every subject matter that I needed. On top of all this, Michael is a very good tutor in general. He helps break things down in a way that is easy to understand and remember. I would recommend Michael to anyone who needs help studying for the TEAS. He was worth every penny!
Thank you VERY much for the wonderful praise, Kathleen! You're an excellent student and I wish the absolute best for you in your future academic and life endeavors!
Michael is such a wonderful tutor! He knows exactly what he's doing and is very helpful for our daughter in all subjects especially physics! I recommend him to anyone without a doubt!
Thank you very much Dalila! It's always a pleasure working with you.
Michael helped my daughter go from a failing grade in geometry to a C on her final report card last year. He is great at explaining concepts so the student can understand. My daughter has much more confidence in her math abilities now. We will definitely retain his services again this year. Thanks Michael!
Thank you, Beth! :-)
Michael knows how to teach and he is a patient tutor who has been helping my son develop and master Algebra. In my son's words, "What I learn from Michael in one hour is more that I learn in a week in the classroom because he is so clear and focused".
Thank you very much Fern! Much appreciated
Contacting Michael V. through WyzAnt was my first experience in hiring a tutor. First of all, I appreciate the integrity with which the entire process was handled. Second, but most important was the help and attention Michael gave our 10th-grade student. My son was having comprehension issues in Honors Chemistry. Michael was able to assist my son in understanding the subject and feel prepared and confident for the exam. In addition, Michael was able to give us, the parents, valuable and encouraging feedback about our son's abilities. Because of Michael's tutoring and my son's hard work, we were thrilled and astonished when we received his year-end grades last week: an A on the Chemistry final and an A for the quarter. Wow! Thank you, Michael. We are so happy to have made this connection and my son can move more confidently into these last two years of high school knowing we can call on Michael through WyzAnt. By the way, Michael was prompt and great with follow-up. Thanks again.
Marsha, you have my utmost gratitude; thank you for your kind words and thoughts on my behalf.
I just googled 'tutors in Charlotte' and hit the jackpot when I found Michael. I sent a brief review of what I needed to him via email, and was completely amazed at how well prepared he was at our session. He had not only done his homework on my subject, but far exceeded my expectations. He is extremely professional, intelligent, patient, to the point, and was genuinely concerned with my understanding of the material once our session was complete. I am not that easily impressed with people as a general rule, so for me to take the time to write this is a testament to what a great tutor Michael actually is. I would definitely hire him again and again should I ever need tutoring in the future and would highly recommend him to anyone else seeking assistance. I have told many others about Michael since our meeting should they ever need a tutor and would like to let Wyzant know what a gem they have found in using him. Thank you Michael.
Robin, thank you SO much for these wonderful compliments!
Michael was very helpful, made things easy to understand, and was easy to get along with. He made my tutoring experience very comfortable!
Thank you Shira!
I have been very pleased with the tutoring services that Michael provided my son over the last several months. Michael was very professional and had a solid command of the subject material. He was always on time and came prepared. His teaching style was not only very personable but also very effective as our son always seemed to understand the material that was covered. Michael was flexible and was open to add-on tutoring sessions when needed. Our son's good grade in physical science would not have been possible without Michael's assistance. I can't say enough nice things about Michael and would hold heartily recommend him as a tutor for other students.
Thank you so much for the compliments, Mark!
When one of your kids needs help in school and you don't know where to go, it makes you feel a bit uncertain. I literally googled "Geometry Tutors" and took a chance.
First of all let me say that if you are looking for a Geometry tutor, look no further. Michael is an excellent choice in our opinion. Michael listens, he made sure that all our needs were met and most of, he made us a priority at a moments notice. Michael has a great attitude and is extremely organized. He is prompt and super smart!! My son left his sessions feeling inspired and asked to see Michael again. All our goals were met and we highly recommend Michael to anyone who needs a tutor in Geometry.
Thank you so much for the wonderful praise, Susan!
Michael has been a blessing to my family. My child was failing English and Math, 6th grade, and brought his grades back up and gained confidence in his ability to succeed in School. Michael was the key to my child's success. We have had several sessions with Michael and wish we could have him here more often, but he is a busy tutor. Michael has helped our child so much that we wish to continue to have him tutor over the Summer. This will keep my child's mind fresh and ready for the new school year.
Thank you so much for the wonderful compliments, Andrea!
That is what my son said after his first session with Michael and some of the "mentoring" tips that he gave was priceless. Michael made our son feel even more confident about his challenges. Michael instantly talked about gaining confidence from their sessions together which can carry over to everything. When I heard Michael encourage and tell my son that being around positive friends can make a difference in his life and in his academics, I instantly knew that he is not only a great tutor, he is instilling values of a Life Coach. So excited about this partnership for our 7th Grader.
Thank you very much Tina!
Looking forward to hearing about your son's future success stories. I have confidence in him!
The best tutor I have ever had! I like working with Michael because he is very patient. He really knows how to break chemistry down for someone like me who has never experience Chemistry in my entire life. I would highly reccomend him to anyone!
I enjoy working with you, and I'm hopeful that you will indeed be successful in your Chemistry course this semester!
I consider Michael V. to be a good communicator, able to convey a concept in several ways, prompt, courteous, knowledgeable in Algebra and brings reference material to the tutoring session.
I would definitely recommend him to others seeking tutoring.
Thank you very much Peter!
Michael is a great tutor. He shows up prepared and ready to help! He is nice, patient, and very reliable. He breaks down information to a format that is not only understandable, but also boosts my confidence about getting the score I want on my test. I have no doubt that if I continue under his guidance, I will have nothing but success!
Thank you, Michelle! It's been great working with you so far, and I am confident that you will score highly on the ACT.
Michael is an amazing tutor and came to every session very prepared to help me achieve my goals. He was also on time each session and was very easy to contact.
Thank you, Jeff! I'm very confident you're going to see the improved Praxis scores that you're aiming for.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

The ACT is a fast-paced, challenging test of aptitude for academics. In order to succeed on the Science section of the exam, you need to be very strong in Reading Comprehension, and be able to readily interpret data presented in the form of graphs, tables, and charts. You'll also need to have an understanding of the Scientific Method, be able to compare and contrast data, be able to compare written scientific opinion papers, and be able to extrapolate data to other similar situations.
This surprises a lot of students who take the ACT Science exam ... one might be expecting a test of his/her knowledge of Cell Biology, Chemistry, or Physics. While knowledge in those subjects is helpful, this is ultimately a Reading Comprehension test with a science "spin" or "twist".
Don't be unprepared for the ACT! Let me be your guide to success.

As a licensed physical therapist, I've worked with hundreds of RNs, LPNs, and CNAs in professional settings ranging from ICU to Nursing Homes to Home Healthcare. Many of the courses required to become a nurse overlap, or are similar to, a physical therapist's educational path.

Math skills beyond arithmetic. Generally "pre-algebra" courses are offered to middle school, junior high, and high school students. Skills learned in "pre-algebra" are useful for taking college entrance exams. These math skills are also crucial for application to life, such as understanding fractions, percentages, averages, statistics, equations, etc.
Need help proofreading your essays, papers, or journals? I can help you out. I'm an expert with sentence structure. I can help you eliminate passive voice in your writing. I'll help you to identify commonly misused words. I can also assist you with eliminating "run-on" sentences. When I proofread your writing, it will be more fluid and more readable. Your papers will be less vulnerable to the red correction pens of nitpicky teachers and professors.
Two of the greatest challenges of the SAT Math tests are dealing with extraneous information, and managing your pace. In order to be successful, one must not only be "good at math", but also be very adept at managing his/her time and focus in an intimidating timed standardized testing environment. Allow me to help you prepare for this challenge; I'll help you improve your mathematical skills, but also help you become a better "test-taker". In my experience, the test-taking skills are almost as important as the fundamental math skills, when taking the SAT I.
I completed Spanish I, II, III, and IV with high marks during my middle school and high school years. I am not fluent in speaking Spanish, but I am more than capable of teaching the basics to Spanish I and II students in Grades 7 through 12, or introductory Spanish for college undergraduates.

I can provide the student with advice and instruction for organizational skills, optimizing your studying environment, class note-taking skills, scheduling your study time, and test-taking skills.
