University of NC at Charlotte (English)
University of Phoenix, Tucson, Arizona (Master's)
I have been teaching and tutoring for over 15 years and have loved every minute of it. My specialty is English and Language Arts. I decided to get a degree in English at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte because as a child in school it was my favorite subject. The more I taught English, the more I learned and the better I was able to teach it. After a number of years I received my master's degree in Education at the University of Phoenix in Tucson, Arizona, which gave me even more tools to use in helping students understand that they can do it!
My tutoring methods are simple. I like to learn about each student's background including feelings, likes and dislikes. I want students to feel relaxed, open to learning, and be comfortable around me. There are no stupid questions except the ones that go unasked. I treat every student as an individual and tailor my approach to meet each student's individual needs.
A little more about me? I recently moved from Tucson, Arizona, where I have lived for the past 20 years. I love the desert and have seen my share of rattlesnakes. I even have a pet tarantula named Matilda. I have raised potbellied pigs, have four dogs and one cat. My critters have had to stay in Arizona in a good home while I am here taking care of my family. I have no children, so my students are my kids! Just remember: I love teaching English! I have been teaching and tutoring for over 15 years and have loved every minute of it. Maryanne did an outstanding job with my daughter. My daughter felt she was very personable, professional and informative with her instructions. I would love to use Maryanne again and I would highly recommend her to others.
Maryanne has been working with my daughter for some time now. It has been a great help with both her writing and grammar skills. It has also helped her to have more confidence in her writing.
I've just begun taking lessons with Maryanne and I really enjoy her teaching methods. She is very patient by making sure I fully understand what we cover during each lesson. She's really helpful in suggesting me how to study more effectively. Just after a few meetings, I noticed her teaching experience as she was always prepared with new topics at every lesson. At the end of each meeting, she provide me with detailed reviews, which are very useful to check my progress. In a few words, Maryanne is able to convey her teaching passion that prompts me to learn more from her.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have had experience teaching students successfully in grades K-6 in various subjects. I am able to teach all subjects and easily develop a rapport with students. My pace is relaxed to minimize any stress the student may be feeling. I can help students with their school work and/or develop an individualized program for them based on their particular needs.

I have been teaching English for over 20 years to students of all ages. I have tutored English as a Second Language to a man from Japan, and a girl from Sweden. Some students wanted to know English grammar while others wanted more of a conversational English.
First I get an English writing sample from the student. This gives me a good overall idea of this student's abilities in English. From there I determine where we should begin in spelling, vocabulary, conversation, and writing if requested. I can use a variety of materials, but will not know what to use until I analyze the writing sample.
I love teaching grammar. I have taught it for approximately 20 years to students of all ages. My teaching covers all parts of speech, sentence patterns, types of sentences, verbals, punctuation and more.
I teach literature for all grade levels but more specifically for grades 7-12. I can help students with whatever literature they are reading in school, providing support and direction according to the classroom teachers' syllabi. I like to emphasize to students that they take notes while in class because this provides me with a record of the students' understanding of the material and shows me where their strengths and weaknesses are, and where the teacher is going with the lesson. With this information, I can successfully help students navigate whatever literature assignments they are given.
I have taught students of various ages how to learn phonics successfully. If possible, I like to keep pace witht what the school teacher is doing in the area of phonics so the student doesn't become confused. I can keep pace with what the teacher is doing in class, or I can develop an individualized plan to meet the students' specific needs. My teaching style is low key to minimize any stress the student may be feeling.
