About Linda

Knowing a subject doesn't mean you can teach. I've taught for over 30 years and worked with all levels of students, first grade through college level and basic students through advanced. I have a B.S. in Education and a Master's degree in English. I am a National Board Certified Teacher. I've started successful SAT programs at two of my former high schools. Students' scores increased an average of 100-300 points after completing my course. I've helped develop curriculum and mentored new teachers entering the educational field. I tutor through several other agencies and really enjoy helping students reach their goals. I not only teach the subject, but I also help my students understand their own methods of learning. This knowledge will help you learn to help yourself. I love teaching and try to make my tutoring sessions enjoyable as well as fruitful. I would love to work with you. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I devised an ACT class for my high school as well as tutored individual students with an average increase in score of 7 points. I have taught grammar for over 40 years , so I'm very confident in helping my students understand and master the grammar section of the test.

English

I taught all levels of English for 40 years. Students had highest level of writing success in county on state writing exam for several years. I have worked with ACT/SAT for over 20 years. I had 100% passing success for students on state end of course English exams.

ESL/ESOL

I taught a summer course at the University of Nanjing in 2011 and concentrated on oral English with my students. I have worked with several professionals who needed help to speak more clearly. I have helped professionals pass the TOEFL to gain permission to practice in the states. I have a B.S. in Education and a Master's degree in English.

Grammar

I have taught grammar for over 40 years and edited professional papers for clients. My students achieved a 100% passing rate on the state end of course test on grammar. I teach the grammar portion of the ACT at our school workshop.

Literature

I taught American, British, and World Literature at all levels from basic to honors. I helped design curriculum for the high school level. I worked with students to create literary papers in all literary areas.

Proofreading

I have worked with multiple students and clients on various types of papers from college admission essays to pamphlets and books for publication.

Reading

I was hired as reading tutor at high school for the past 6 years to help struggling students pass the state reading test, and achieved a 95% passing rate. I have taught SAT reading strategies for over 20 years with an average increase of 125 points. I have worked with all age levels from fourth grade to adults.

SAT Reading

I have taught SAT reading for 20 years. The average increase is 125 points with some students increasing 200 or more points. I developed SAT classes for the county schools. I help students understand both how the passage is written and how to translate the questions. I provide specific strategies for each type of reading passage.

SAT Writing

I have been hired by our local high school to work with students on ACT/SAT writing. The average writing scores for my students on these tests is a 9. I was the writing specialist at my last two high schools.

Study Skills

I've taught for over 30 years. SQR3, Cornell Notes, and mapping are 3 of the strategies I use to help students be successful in school. One of my students was on the verge of flunking out of college. After 4 weeks working with him, he turned the semester around and eventually made the Dean's List.

TOEFL

I've taught summer classes at the University of Nanjing, China. One of my students in the states needed to pass the TOEFL to be allowed to practice as a veterinarian. I worked with him for about six weeks, and he was able to secure this position.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary was an essential part of my curriculum. Working with vocabulary has allowed my students to raise their scores on the SAT and ACT. Teaching root words and prefixes to one of my students helped him increase his reading score one grade level.

Writing

I was the writing specialist at my last school. My students had the highest scores in the county on the state writing test for 7 years. I helped develop the writing curriculum for the county. My SAT candidates average a 9 on the writing portion of the test. I have worked with elementary through college level students. I have taught SAT/ACT writing for 20 years.
