Knowing a subject doesn't mean you can teach. I've taught for over 30 years and worked with all levels of students, first grade through college level and basic students through advanced. I have a B.S. in Education and a Master's degree in English. I am a National Board Certified Teacher. I've started successful SAT programs at two of my former high schools. Students' scores increased an average of 100-300 points after completing my course. I've helped develop curriculum and mentored new teachers entering the educational field. I tutor through several other agencies and really enjoy helping students reach their goals. I not only teach the subject, but I also help my students understand their own methods of learning. This knowledge will help you learn to help yourself. I love teaching and try to make my tutoring sessions enjoyable as well as fruitful. I would love to work with you. Patient, positive reinforcement. Each lesson is very individualized in spending time on what my son is struggling on. He feels she is very informed on the test ins and outs! Helping greatly with the strategy.
Again, Linda has connected with my son and had made him feel very prepared and positive toward the SAT testing. He feels that he has made great strides in being able understanding how to handle each section of the test. She has been able to help him with his grammar section which has always been a problem for him in testing. I feel I could have not made a better choice for a tutor.
When I reviewed Linda's profile on WyzAnt, I said she should be the right tutor for me. My subject was not just a regular English, but it was academic English. I had to pass either the TOEFL or the IELTS with a good score to resume my carrier in the AVMA ( The American Veterinary Medical Association). My challenging aspect was the speaking section. But Linda helped me a lot to be prepared. She focused on my weak points and gave me specific advice to help improve my speaking ability. I passed my IELTS test with good scores. Overall I was glad to choose her over any other tutor.
There are no words to express my gratitude to Linda. She has been a wonderful help for me to improve my English. I enjoy working with her, and I feel that she understands my needs. Linda, you are just GREAT!. Thank you SO much.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with ESL students in my teaching career. ESL students not only need vocabulary, but sentence structure, idioms, and basic phonetics to be successful in the English language. I am currently working with an ESL student and taught in a summer camp in China at Nanjing University.
I have taught study skills all of my teaching career. For understanding of material that is read, I recommend using the Cornell system of notetaking. This process allows students to condense material -- ask questions and develop a summation of the important aspects of the assignment. I also have used and taught KWL charts, graphic organizers, RAFT for writing papers, and reading techniques for various reading assignments. Simple tools such as folders, highlighters, and dividers can help students organize and retain information much easier. I can also help students understand their own learning style with a simple test and teach the mechanics of that style for greater efficiency of learning. SQR3 is a standard means of attacking reading assignments especially in such courses as history and science.
I use these and more strategies to help students be successful in the classroom.
