What I love most about teaching students with special needs is the children themselves. They know that I am interested in them by my enthusiastic approach and my ability to help them learn in the areas in which they are experiencing the most difficulty. I am skilled at developing modifications to curricula and lessons to ensure that each student’s learning style is addressed with appropriate instructional plans. My students are highly motivated by the creative, multisensory lessons I develop. Seeing students grow academically, socially, and emotionally using these techniques is very satisfying.
In order to be the best teacher I can be, I worked hard to develop my skills and knowledge base in my Master’s program at Grand Canyon University. I gained top notch experience as a special education paraprofessional in the highly regarded St. Tammany Parish Public Schools for the past five years. I an now a teacher in an Alternative Classroom in St. Tammany Parish. Also, I have had extensive practicum experience in special education classrooms in neighboring school systems. I feel equipped now to assume the responsibilities of a teaching role in a special education classroom.
I am certified with a B.S. in elementary education and a Masters of Education in Special Education K-12. My experience encompasses teaching in a mild/moderate classroom, as well as adapting instruction to specific children in small group and individual contexts. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

My experience in the special education classroom spans the last five years. I have worked in the RNC, Mild/moderate and inclusion classrooms with students of all exceptionlities. My experience includes direct learning, cooperative learning groups and Unique learning. I have also taught Edmark Reading. I am trained on Promethian and can also use boardmaker. The exceptionalities I have worked with include Autism, Down syndrome, Mental Retardation, Pervasive Developmental disorder and Fragile X Syndrome. I have a B.S. in Elementary and I am working on my Masters In Special Education.
