About Melanie

I also a certified secondary English teacher and taught freshman English, senior composition, beginning and advanced journalism, and newspaper production to students at East Grand Rapids High School. My journalism students received many national awards including a Pacemaker nomination.

I am a published author, having co-authored 4 books on the use of color in interior design for the Rockport Publishing Company. I also wrote the text and produced a photographic book about Newport Beach, California, for Twin Lights Publishing Company. I self-published a book on baking pies called "The Importance of Pie." For three years prior to moving to South Carolina, I wrote news feature articles for a daily newspaper in Michigan, The Holland Sentinel.

I received my undergraduate degree from Albion College with majors in art and English, and completed my Master's degree through Calvin College, with some credits from the University of Michigan. I completed 16 hours of post graduate study in journalism at Michigan State University.

As a professional teacher I've had experience teaching art at all levels from pre-school through continuing education courses. I taught award-winning students at East Grand Rapids High in Michigan for 12 years, and taught art education courses for prospective teacher candidates at Grand Valley State University for 8 years. Most recently I taught watercolor classes to continuing education students at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

I enjoy working with students of all ages and helping each one achieve his or her personal best. I believe that the ability to successfully communicate through writing and through art ensures success in all future endeavors.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

Drawing is the basis of all design, so it is a key aspect of all visual art learning. I have devised many drawing "exercises" that help open a student's mind to the limitless ways of receiving visual stimuli and responding to it.

How to render subjects with various tones of light and shadow, how to draw three-dimensional shapes with correct perspective, how to choose an appropriate texture for the chosen subject, how to see "positive" and "negative" space; all of these skills will help a student begin to express his or her unique viewpoint.

Students should have experience in several media, including graphite, ink, marker and crayon or pastel.

English

I have taught freshman English, senior composition, and print journalism at a highly respected high school in East Grand Rapids Michigan. I am also a published author, and have written four books on the use of color in interior design for Rockport Publishing Company, and a book on the community of Newport Beach California, for Twin Lights Publishing Company. I wrote news feature articles for a daily newspaper in Holland, Michigan, and have written extensively for Demand Studios online. My articles appear on popular websites such as EHow. Currently I write for a monthly magazine.

ESL/ESOL

As a public school teacher I taught students who were learning English through immersion, and had success in helping them acclimate to the new language.

In California and in Michigan I worked in after school "homework houses" that assisted students from Spanish speaking backgrounds learn to complete their homework in English. I discovered that patience and a willingness to learn a bit of Spanish led to success for the students I assisted.

Painting

I have painted since I was a small child, and still am fascinated with the endless possibilities of applying color to a surface. As an art teacher I have worked in virtually every medium. I am equally at home with watercolor, oils or acrylic paints.

Most recently I work on oil paintings outside,"en plein aire," and I work on watercolors inside.

I enjoy painting a variety of subjects including abstract and non-objective pieces. I believe that having a complete understanding of the mechanics of color mixing frees the artist to express his or her experiences using a variety of techniques.

My work has been shown and sold in a variety of venues including galleries, museums and art centers, and public buildings.

SAT Writing

I am a professional free-lance journalist and currently write for both print and online publications. I taught English, composition and journalism at a prestigious high school in Michigan. As a tutor I have worked with students preparing for the SAT, and have extensive vocabulary lists and grammar reviews available in addition to practice in composition, depending on the needs of each student.

Writing

I am an experienced journalist. I have had four books published by Rockport Publishing Company, and one book published by Twin Lights Publishing Company. For three years I wrote news features for a daily newspaper. I wrote feature articles for a women's magazine and currently write features for a monthly magazine. I've written extensively for the online publisher Demand Studios. I am a certified secondary English teacher and taught freshman English, senior composition, introduction to journalism and newspaper journalism.

Knowledgeable and excellent tutor — My Son is taking SAT prep and reading and writing with Melanie. She is such a wonderful tutor and within few classes itself I noticed a major difference in my Son's writing attitude and style. My son's perception of writing has completely changed and I am very happy and satisfied. Instead of "teaching" the techniques of writing, she helped him to come up with logical, legible reasonable way of wri ...
