Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Read quickly, but actively. Get a sense of the main idea and how the paragraphs fit together. Come back for details later. Try to quickly determine where "the passage is going." Pay close attention to key words: but, clearly, as a result, etc. Also, pay close attention to the "question stem."

Algebra 1

I have tutored several students in basic Algebra over the last few years. I have completed worksheets in linear equations, functions and graphs, inequalities, quadratic equations and functions, and polynomial factoring.

Algebra 2

I've tutored high school and several technical college students in Algebra II. I am experienced in presenting exponential and logarithmic processing, conic sections, basic trigonometric functions, polar coordinates, vectors, probability and statistical methods.

I programmed in COBOL for several years for several major companies. My experience was gained on both IBM mainframe and mid-range computers.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored Grade school and Middle School students in all basic math and English subjects. The math material included fractions, decimals, all arithmetic computations, understanding basic geometric figures, calculating area, volume and surface area of all figures. I've also tutored students in basic sentence structure, correct grammatical usage, reading for comprehension and for detail, and basic writing for clear communications.

Elementary Math

I first make sure that the student is proficient in basic skills. Then I focus on helping the student understand what particular problems are really aimed at. Each step of a problem's solution is shown and the student then applies this knowledge to solving problems.

I have tutored two foreign-born adults in English. The emphasis was on conversational English and the proper usage of grammar and typical business or social conversation. I completed a course for ESOL instructors given at my local library. I found the exercise very instructive and I was very gratified to see the progress in basic English usage by the students I tutored.

The math portion of GED includes a comprehensive test on all basic math subjects. I have rich experience in presenting basic math subjects, and I take a real interest in the student's ability to grasp and use the discipline of mathematics.

I have presented basic and advanced geometry to several high school students. I am very experienced in solving geometry problems involving triangles, quadrilaterals, circles and coordinate geometry. I am well versed in all basic proofs, use of special geometric features (e.g. incenter, circumcenter) and in theorems related to solid geometry.

Linear Algebra

I have tutored many students over the past few years in all HS math subjects, including linear algebra. I have several texts and completed worksheet assignments for algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

I have tutored several students in Precalculus. Subject areas include polynomial and rational functions, systems of equations, matrices, combinations and inverse functions and slope/equations of lines.

I've tutored several students in PSAT and SAT preparation. I have completed several sample tests in both test preps, and have developed techniques for faster test-taking and resultant higher scores.

I have a Master's degree in Accounting from St. John's University. I worked many years in corporate accounting and also in the implementation on accounting-based computer systems. I have used QuickBooks several times, most recently with a neighbor who was establishing his small business accounting system on Quickbooks. I also tutored accounting and bookkeeping at a community college.

SAT Math

SAT math tutoring combines the presentation of mathematical problems with techniques for rapid and accurate solutions. I have learned several procedures, over the course of several years, for quick problem processing, as well as overall strategy for managing the test.

Study Skills

I have developed routines for mastering various subjects which I created while tutoring my own children. These techniques involve locating the 'heart of the matter' for any given assignment, and then outlining the steps required for its solution. Study skills help to develop pride and self-esteem; mastering a subject is a real accomplishment, not simply the tasks involved in completing an ordeal. Study skills are used throughout a lifetime; the skills developed as a teenager will be beneficial for many years and in many different pursuits.

I have tutored several students in all of the course disciplines included in the TEAS test area. These include basic math and algebra, English grammar and comprehension, writing for clarity and style and basic logic.

I have in-depth experience in tutoring Trigonometry. I have covered Trig functions and their use in practical applications, oblique triangles (laws if Sines and Cosines), inverses of functions and complex numbers.

I have used "The Elements of Style" extensively to improve my own level of communication. I have helped several students prepare term papers, college entrance essays, and develop their own style of effective written communication.

Very patient. — John is the person you want to tutor you. John is great at what he does. My experience with him was short but good. He will go far beyond what is required to help you in figuring out what it is that you should be doing. He will take the time to explain and show you the error to the problems while getting to the correct answers. He's very patient, sweet, caring, knowledgeable, and understanding. ...
