About Joshua

I've always been interested in teaching, especially in science. Before coming to UNC, I taught Sunday schools and vacation Bible schools with my church, volunteered as a peer tutor in high school, and conducted my senior project on emphasizing project-based learning in elementary school classrooms. As a college student, I volunteered with UNC ScienceDays and currently volunteer at Carrboro High School as a tutor.

I find the experience of helping a student grasp the complexity of a subject to be very rewarding, and emphasize this philosophy in my tutoring style; achieving a nuanced grasp of a subject leads to better learning outcomes than simply remembering the facts in a study guide, and I seek to challenge students by giving them all of the facts they need to synthesize an answer with as little help as possible. I make an effort to master the subjects I learn rather than simply pass my classes, and I hope to carry this into my work as a tutor.

I find working on mathematical equations to be an enjoyable exercise in reasoning and discovery, so I have taken Calculus I, II, and III, as well as Survey of Mathematics and Differential Equations.

I have been passionate about the sciences since childhood, so I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, and have taken many of the degree requirements, including General Chemistry I and II, Analytical Chemistry and Analytical Instrumentation, Organic Chemistry I, II, and III, Inorganic Chemistry I, Physical Chemistry I and II, General Physics I and II, and Introductory Biology.

I am available for contact in the afternoons, and can conduct lessons on most evenings except for Fridays, and on some afternoons. I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve better understanding of your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I have taken and excelled in the classes required in the first three years of the UNC-Chapel Hill Chemistry program, and have extensive experience tutoring students in general and organic chemistry.

Organic Chemistry

I have taken Organic Chemistry I, II, and III at UNC, and organic chemistry is by far my favorite aspect of the discipline. I made a B in Organic Chemistry I, an A in Organic Chemistry II, and a B in Honors Intermediate Organic Chemistry. I emphasize learning the mechanisms of action when helping my friends with their work in class, since learning the mechanisms of actions is much more important to developing an understanding of the discipline than memorizing reactions.

Public Speaking

I have taken two public speaking courses in college, one at a community college and one at UNC. I have given presentations for local news media and for school programs at my high school. In teaching public speaking, I focus on developing positive apprehension to maintain focus and passion while reducing negative apprehension through preparation and practice.
