About Jet

I studied Forensic Science and Biochemistry as an undergraduate at VCU, then moved from Richmond to Chapel Hill to work on my doctorate in Molecular Biophysics. I have always loved teaching and started tutoring my peers in middle school. I was a TA in college for Physical Chemistry and started a club that taught monthly science workshops at a local school. In graduate school I have lectured for various science classes, designed and taught a biology for non-majors couse, and recorded a lesson on Pharmacogenomics for high school classes. I have tutored and run exam reviews for over 40 UNC student athletes in biology, genetics, anatomy, chemistry and physics. I completed a College Science Teaching course and the UNC Science Teaching Workshop series, attended a national biology education conference and am a UNC Scientific Educator Fellow.

I have a very active tutoring style, I like to assist students working through and engaging with the material. My favorite activities are challenging them to further their understanding of the concepts by applying the knowledge to new examples and problems. But still I don't know everything, and when a student asks a question I cannot answer from memory or experience, I really enjoy learning the answer with them. I have ADHD but have also been highly successful academically and I love sharing strategies, tips and advice on how to use your strengths to maximize your learning.

I have been studying and doing science for a decade. I've been awarded the nationally competitive Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. My research employs physical and chemical methods to probe the function of biological molecules, so my broad education and expertise provide a lot of real world, medically relevant examples to help illustrate abstract science concepts.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Genetics

I am currently a tutor for two undergraduate students in genetics at UNC. I have taught a short course on Epigenetics in Medicine at UNC. My dissertation research is centered on the regulation of gene expression and I have taken graduate classes in Advanced Molecular Biology.
