About Shea

I have a BS and MS in Computer Science, and am on track to have my PhD this December. I first used C++ about in 2004, during my undergraduate program, and I've used it off-and-on since. I was a teaching assistant for the C-Tools course at NCSU for several semesters.

I've spent time as a teaching assistant for a number of years while going through graduate school and enjoyed helping others learn. While I've moved on from teaching to the software engineering industry, I confess I somewhat missing the opportunity to teach just a little; a bit of tutoring off-schedule seems a great way to do this without interfering in other obligations.

My background is mostly in computer science, with an undergraduate and graduate degree in the subject. I have a minor in anthropology and a broad range of interests leading to a reasonable knowledge base in various branches of the physical sciences.

I've got a very strong grasp of logic (particularly binary logic) and mathematics, as it underpins a lot of what I've learned and accomplished in computer science.

My language of choice throughout my college career was C++; it's perhaps the language I'm most comfortable with. The years I spent as a teaching assistant for a programming course in C also bleeds in to C++ as well, as they share much of the same syntax. I'd like to think I'm particularly good at emphasizing clean readable code, which is useful if you ever want to program on a team. I've had some experience with other languages, usually those with similar syntax to C/C++/C#/Java, but I've ventured as far as LISP and its derivatives. Outside of programming skills, I have a strong understanding of algorithms and theories in a range of sub-fields of computer science.

Aside from the areas mentioned above, I've ranged pretty broadly in what I like to learn across many of the physical and social sciences. As a result, I might be able to provide a basic grounding in a wide range of other topics.

If you think you might benefit from working with someone who's gone through two computer science programs and has some teaching experience, feel free to contact me to discuss specific needs or to arrange introductory lessons.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

I was a teaching assistant for a number of courses during my graduate career, including C Tools, Networking, HCI, Data Mining, Ethics in Computing and more.

I've earned a BS in Computer Science (Appalachian State University), an MS in Computer Science (North Carolina State University), as well as a PhD in Computer Science (North Carolina State University) (graduation December 2016). I was a teaching assistant at NCSU for a number of years, several of them in a programming course.

I've taught highschoolers some programming in a summer program run by Shaw in 2012 and have written code in a number of languages, including C, C++, C#, Java and LISP.
