About Elisa

Hi! I'm Elisa and I'm a recent Enloe HS graduate and current undergraduate student at UNC Chapel Hill double majoring in Biomedical Engineering and French, and minoring in Polish. I hope one day to become a doctor and work overseas for Doctors Without Borders. In high school, I was an active member of my robotics team, Medical BioScience Academy, and completed a medical internship in Panadura, Sri Lanka. When I was a freshman in high school, I started an elementary tutoring organization at local magnet elementary schools and have tutored regularly for 4 years at 6 different schools. I completed the IB Diploma Programme in high school as well, so I am very well equipped to help with the EE, ToK, and studying for exams. When I applied to college, I applied to over 14 schools and am also able to do college essay editing and review.

I am currently looking to start tutoring students of all ages in order to help them improve their grades/understanding of a subject, get ahead in school, or become more confident in a subject. My favorite subjects to tutor are French (in which I am almost fully fluent), English, math, and science, and I can help with ACT/SAT/Subject Test prep. I love tutoring because of the experience that I had with tutors when I was in high school and how they enabled me to succeed in my classes and on my exams. I want to be able to give back to the community with the skills I have and help students grow to love what they are learning and studying in school.

I have succeeded in math in school, up through AP Calculus/AP Statistics. I have gotten high scores on my SAT math sections and AP maths. I have also tested in IB Maths SL. I enjoy tutoring math because of my robotics engineering background and my love for sharing the problem solving abilities that one gets from studying math.

I have been studying French for nearly 8 years and am highly proficient in writing and speaking. I tested in IB Higher Level French and Advanced Placement French Language. I have placed in the top 20 or higher in the nation on the National French Exam for the past three years. I communicate solely in French with pen-pals and foreign friends daily and make a point to read and watch French news almost each day. I love to speak in French and it is my favorite subject to learn and teach. I have tutored high school French students before as well.

I have gotten high scores on AP English Language/English Literature, SAT/ACT English and Writing, and overall, enjoy helping students with reading comprehension and improving English skills. I have excellent writing skills and have been able to share those with friends and elementary aged students over the past few years.

I am a really laid back person and very tenacious in trying to help students learn what they need to know. I have a passion for teaching and helping others and I am very flexible with your needs and your preferences. I am fun and ready to help you become more confident and successful!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I got a 35 on my ACT reading exam and a 5 on AP English Language and Composition. I recently tested in IB Higher Level English A: Literature and AP English Literature and Composition, where I expect to receive high marks.

ACT Math

The best way to get better at ACT Math is to do timed practices with questions of varying difficulty. I like to start at a level a little lower than where the student is currently to start confidently, and then gradually increase the time restraints and the question difficulty so that it is similar to that of the real ACT exam.

ACT Reading

I have received high scores on the ACT tests that I took in the past and I have always been very good at reading comprehension. The best way to get better at ACT Reading is to do timed practices with passages/questions of varying difficulty. I like to start at a level a little lower than the student is at to start confidently, and then gradually increase the time restraints and the passage difficulty so that it is similar to that of the real ACT exam.

Algebra 1

I have a very firm grounding in Algebra 1 and thoroughly enjoy this level of algebra. I like to relate algebraic problems to the real world to try to help students understand them with examples instead of just rote memorization of rules.

Elementary Math

I have tutored elementary math for 4 years and have been very successful in helping kids learn what they need to know to achieve their desired grades. I have also been successful in helping kids realize the importance of the things that they are studying so that they can apply it outside of the classroom.

Elementary Science

I have tutored elementary science for 4 years (mostly 2nd and 3rd graders, but I am flexible for K-5). I am currently studying biomedical engineering as well so I am studying chemistry, biology, and physics, all of which can help with elementary science.

English

I have gotten very high grades in English throughout my entire schooling career and very high scores on my SAT, ACT, and AP English/Writing exams. I like to help with reading comprehension, writing and grammar skills, and vocabulary skills/usage.

French

I have been studying French for nearly 8 years and am highly proficient in writing and speaking. I recently tested in IB Higher Level French and Advanced Placement French Language. I have placed in the top 20 or higher in the nation on the National French Exam for the past three years. I communicate solely in French with pen-pals and foreign friends daily and make a point to read and watch French news almost each day.

Geometry

I love geometry because of the real-world application and the ability to turn almost any problem into a real-world example. It makes sense to me and I have very successful at sharing this with students and helping them see how geometry applies to their surroundings as well, therefore making it easier to understand and learn.

Grammar

I have made high marks on my AP and SAT/ACT English, Reading, and Writing exams. I am very good at grammar and like to teach it to help people become better at English.

Literature

I often read for pleasure and thoroughly enjoy helping students improve their reading comprehension skills. For me, it is all about seeing the lessons and themes in literature and how that relates to our own lives today - this skill allows me, and students, to better remember the plots, themes, and messages of certain works.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is a great subject to be related to the real world. I have a very firm grounding in prealgebra and can help students become confident enough for success in prealgebra but also for later levels of algebra.

Proofreading

I have spent a lot of time editing other people's writing, whether it was for in-class essays, practice AP/IB prompts, homework/project essays, and college essays. I not only enjoy proofreading, but I enjoy showing students what changes I made and helping them understand why my changes are correct, or sometimes just "more correct" than what they wrote originally (sometimes English can be tricky and there isn't always ONE right answer).

PSAT

I scored very high when I originally took the PSAT a few years ago. I understand the benefits of the PSAT and how a firm grounding on the PSAT can lead to later success on the SAT. I am very proficient at all subjects tested on the PSAT.

Reading

I read often for fun and I love to help students improve their reading comprehension. I have done this with elementary and middle school aged students, but due to tons of experience with high school level English, I am prepared to tutor high school aged students as well.

SAT Math

The best way to get better at SAT Math is to do timed practices with questions of varying difficulty. I like to start at a level a little lower than the student is at to start confidently, and then gradually increase the time restraints and the question difficulty so that it is similar to that of the real SAT exam.

SAT Reading

I got a 740 on my SAT reading exam and a 5 on AP English Language and Composition. I recently tested in IB Higher Level English A: Literature and AP English Literature and Composition, where I expect to receive high marks.

Spelling

I have always been a very proficient speller and writer. English grammar and spelling is one of my strong suits.

Study Skills

I graduated from a rigorous, nationally ranked high school where I took 10 AP exams and completed the entire International Baccalaureate Diploma. I was able to be successful due to my organization, prioritization, and effective study methods that I am excited to share with other students. Getting ahead, getting good grades, and becoming more confident in subjects begins with good study habits!

Vocabulary

I have always been praised for my diction in my writing in high school and I am always improving. I am excellent at process of elimination and making educated guesses on standardized testing for vocabulary if for some reason I do not know a word included in the answer choices.

Writing

I have been very successful on both SAT and ACT writing and in my AP English classes in high school. I love to write and improve sentence structure and organization.
