About Lauren

I am a 25-year-old medical student at UNC School of Medicine, with a B.S. in Biology & Chemistry from UNC Chapel Hill and a M.S. in Biomedical Sciences from Brody School of Medicine in Greenville, NC. I am extremely excited to gain formal tutoring experience while helping students to achieve their academic goals and to gain the critical thinking skills needed to succeed in future endeavors. I have volunteer tutoring experience with middle school science students (two years), as well as with graduate school test prep among my college peers (one year), and the joy and fulfillment I received from watching as their confidence grew and scores improved have given me the enthusiasm to continue further with my teaching experience.

While the large majority of my academic training is in the scientific disciplines, I am also a classically trained opera singer and greatly enjoy studying English, German language, and literature. Also, I have successfully taken both the MCAT and GRE exams, and am passionate about helping others achieve their test prep goals, as well.

Please feel free to contact me at any time with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you and working with you in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

Undergraduate degree (BS) in biology from UNC Chapel Hill.
Successfully completed two semesters of undergraduate anatomy and physiology, as well as a first year medical school course in histology, all with grades of A, providing me with both microscopic and macroscopic knowledge of anatomical structures.
Experience with human and animal organ dissection.

Biochemistry

Graduate research in biochemistry - 2 years.
Completed graduate coursework in biochemistry - Biochemistry I (proteins, lipids, nucleic acid synthesis/breakdown pathways, introductory metabolism), Biochemistry II (regulation of metabolism), and Physical Biochemistry (enzyme kinetics, X-ray crystallography, spectroscopic techniques, fluorescence, anisotropy, etc.).
Undergraduate degrees (B.S.) in biology and chemistry.
Undergraduate introduction to biochemistry course - received A.

Biology

Received B.S. in Biology from UNC Chapel Hill in 2014 with 3.52 GPA. Completed coursework: general biology, genetics, cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, anatomy & physiology, animal behavior, cancer biology, ecology & evolution, biochemistry.
AP Biology exam score in high school: 5

Chemistry

I received a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2014 (GPA: 3.5).

Quantitative - 157/170
Writing - 5/6

MCAT

As a medical school applicant recently accepted for entry into the Class of 2020, high MCAT performance was one of many significant factors in achieving my goal of becoming a student doctor. I was able to form a study program for myself modeled after the style of Kaplan or Princeton Review-led courses, which was supplemented by content review and practice question sections as I saw fit for my personal needs. That self-study regimen allowed me to score a 34 on my first and only attempt in taking the exam (11 biological science, 12 physical science, 11 verbal reasoning).

Physiology

I have an undergraduate degree (BS) in biology from UNC-Chapel Hill. I successfully completed two semesters of undergraduate physiology, as well as a first year medical school course in histology, all with grades of A, providing me with both microscopic and macroscopic knowledge of anatomical structures.

Piano

I began taking piano lessons at age 10, and I have loved it ever since. My skill set and repertoire are intermediate, so I would be well suited for beginning and intermediate-level piano study.

SAT Math

I took the SAT in 2009, during my junior year of high school. I received a 720 Math (95th percentile).

SAT Reading

Strong history of standardized testing performance.
Took SAT in Spring 2009 and scored 2170 overall (97th percentile):
- 720 Math
- 730 Reading
- 720 Writing
Attended UNC-Chapel Hill XXXX-XXXX, graduating cum laude.

Voice (Music)

I completed a music minor in college, for which I chose voice as my instrument. During that time, I trained in classical and operatic vocal performance for four years, receiving private lessons as well as performing in studio classes, departmental recitals, choir concerts, opera performances, and a culminating solo recital. I hope to use the vocal technique and performing skills I gained through this experience to assist others along their musical journeys, as well!
