About Matthew

Having a major in Music Education, I have always had a passion of empowering other through learning. I believe that is the most important aspect of a teacher to have - passion for what they teach. A love for music is an incredible thing that anyone can have, but an understanding of music creates a far deeper passion for appreciating and knowing what you hear. This is why tutoring for music subjects is so important to me, because it develops this understanding.

My academic passion for music can be seen in the high grades in my undergraduate studies, especially in my Music Theory, Sight-singing, and ear training classes.

I have taught private music lessons since my Junior year of college, and will continue that because of the great experience that it was. I was always encouraged by positive feedback from students and parents, which comes from my honest work ethic and positive reinforcement and feedback that I give to the students I am teaching.

I have a quiet space in Chapel Hill to tutor privately, free from distraction to create an optimal learning environment. However, I am also more than willing to travel to meet the student's needs.

I am flexible and am willing to reschedule when the student cannot make the lesson, as long as I am notified within 24-hours of the session.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I am a Music Education and Performance major from Ithaca College ('15). I always had straight-A's in my ear training classes, and actually applied my advanced ear training techniques to the way that I studied the Trombone, my main instrument. I have always used the solfege system, so much that it is second nature (for example, at times I will subconsciously solfege-sing pop songs as they play on the radio).

General Music

I am a Music Education and Performance major from Ithaca College ('15). My major instrument is the trombone, but I love to learn and teach about any of the music instruments or subjects. I have a New York state teaching certification in music K-12.

Music Theory

I am a Music Education and Performance major from Ithaca College ('15). I always had straight-A's in my music theory classes, and actually applied my advanced theory techniques to the way that I studied the Trombone, my main instrument. An example of this would be during improvisation, having an understanding of not only the keys of the piece, but also the chords of the moment to give my improvisation the greatest number of possibilities.

Sight Singing

I am a Music Education and Performance major from Ithaca College ('15). I always had straight-A's in my sight-singing classes, and actually applied my advanced sight-singing techniques to the way that I studied the Trombone, my main instrument. I use the solfege system to aid in my sight-singing, so much that as I read music, the solfege is going silently through my head as I sight-sing (or play) the music aloud.

Trombone

I am a Music Education and Performance major from Ithaca College ('15), with my main instrument being the trombone. I have taught private trombone lessons for the past two years, and have a New York state teaching certification in K-12 music. Senior year of college, I auditioned and earned a place playing trombone in the top wind ensemble, orchestra, and jazz ensemble at Ithaca.
