About David

Hey! My name is David and I'm a certified English second language (ESL) teacher, business English teacher, writing tutor, and copy editor. I run my own editing and tutoring business and travel the world. I am currently in Shanghai, China, but I offer high quality online lessons wherever you are.

My teaching career started the first time I moved to Shanghai, three years ago—I loved it more than I expected. Writing, literature, and language are great passions of mine and I'm lucky to share them with my students. I studied English Literature at Middlebury College, a top school. My dream is to be a professional novelist, and whenever I'm not teaching, you can find me writing, reading, and seeking out new experiences.

I specialize in essay writing, editing, and teaching ESL, business English, and the TOEFL exam.

My ESL teaching style encourages students to speak as much as possible through role-plays and conversation exercises. I have a very clear, standard American accent and excel in training pronunciation.

As a passionate writer, reader, and English major I also provide excellent guidance in application essays, college essays, SAT writing, grammar, creative writing, and studying literature. I've edited hundreds of essays and know what it takes to stand out. In a tutoring session I will go over your writing with you, helping you develop new ideas, build good structure, and write killer sentences.

You can also send me essays for editing and proofreading. I'll give full comments on your writing—like your teacher or professor never has time to do—so you can take your revision to the next level and become a better writer in the process. I have a certificate in copy editing from the American Copy Editors Society. I charge by word count. Contact me for rates.

My lessons are usually taught online using Skype or whichever software works best for you. If I'm in your area, I can meet in a public place too.

I'm happy to tell you more about myself and answer any questions you have. Thanks for reading and I hope to meet you soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I've been teaching English and writing for two-and-a-half years, am a certified TEFL/TESOL instructor, and graduated with high honors from Middlebury College's department of English and American Literature. Teaching English can mean instruction in writing, reading, speaking, listening, test prep, and critical analysis, so it's hard to describe a single tutoring method, but at its heart studying English is about learning how to express what it's like to be you and how to interpret what it's like to be someone else. After determining a student's needs, I generally focus on prompting them to practice and make discoveries themselves in order to build confidence and create a stronger learning experience.

Grammar

When I'm not tutoring for WyzAnt I'm working as a copy editor. I've edited hundreds of essays and papers, and know how to help students express things clearly and correctly. I also have two years of experience proofreading and copy editing the Middlebury College website and another two years of experience editing the curriculum of an ESL school in Shanghai. I have a certificate in copy editing from Poynter News University and the American Association of Copy Editors. My knowledge of grammar and experience as a teacher of ESL and writing make me a great teacher of grammar as well.

Literature

I have a degree in English Literature with High Honors from Middlebury College. Literature has been a passion for me all my life and I have dedicated a great amount of time to reading literature and writing it. Sharing literature with others and helping them understand it is an honor and a pleasure.

Writing

I've been teaching English and writing for two-and-a-half years, am a certified TEFL/TESOL instructor, and graduated with high honors from Middlebury College's department of English and American Literature. At the core of teaching writing is specificity, brevity, and always answering the question, "so what?" A sentence should be something you can drop on a table. I practice writing every day and am a veteran of self-expression. As a professional copy editor, I also can assist with grammar and correctness.
