I'm a graduate of Bates College (B.A.), the University of Illinois (M.S.), and M.I.T. (M.S.), with degrees in economics and management.

I'm a graduate of Bates College (B.A.), the University of Illinois (M.S.), and M.I.T. (M.S.), with degrees in economics and management.

I've been a tutor since 2001, when I started preparing students to take the SAT, ACT, GRE, and GMAT exams. To me, standardized exams are like puzzles: they can be fun and challenging. With a little instruction and practice, you can achieve significant improvement in scores -- and maybe even enjoy them.

I also tutor other subjects that I enjoy, and try to bring that enjoyment to the tutoring process. I'm always positive and supportive. Working one-on-one and at your own speed, you'll overcome weaknesses and build confidence.

I have a 24-hour cancellation policy: students who miss a session with less than 24-hours notice are charged for 1 hour at their regular rate.

Most math comes easy to me, but I know math is many students' least favorite subject. Even students who struggle in a classroom can succeed in a supportive one-on-one environment where mistakes don't hurt: they become a means to learning.

Business

I have an M.S. from the Sloan School of Management at M.I.T. I have 30 years of experience in business, most of it in marketing and customer insights. I spent 10 years as a global business consultant, completing projects on 5 continents.

GMAT,

GMAT

I have been a GMAT tutor since 2001. Although I primarily teach ACT and SAT, I recently re-took the GMAT in preparation for teaching it, and scored 760. For most students, the GMAT's data sufficiency problems are the most challenging, and I concentrate on those with most students. Also, the GMAT places significant time pressure on students. Good preparation means increasing speed, along with increasing accuracy. I focus on both.
GRE,

GRE

I have been a GRE tutor since 2001. I have worked with students who are strong in math. For them, the usual need is to become familiar with the more difficult GRE math questions. These often differ from the math they have learned in school, and require that the students apply their math skills in new and different ways. I have also worked with students who are weak in math, who have math anxiety, or who have decided that they are "just not numbers people." For them, GRE math coaching requires the un-learning of negative attitudes. I have found that treating GRE math as a puzzle to be solved and creating a a low-stress environment where it's OK to make a mistake can help these students to make quick progress.

Proofreading,

Proofreading

For two years, I was Editor of a major business journal. My duties included much more than proofreading, but I did need to ensure that the articles we published were well-written and that their content was correct. I have taught business writing periodically since 1985, usually to managers and executives. Again, there's a difference between writing and proofreading, but they are closely related skills.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

I have been an ACT tutor since 2001. In my experience, many students -- even those who struggle with the English section -- can benefit greatly by learning a few basic rules. With practice, they "take ownership" of these rules, and begin to applying them almost automatically. Leveraging a few simple strategies, most students quickly improve their scores in English.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

I have been an ACT tutor since 2001. In my experience, many students find the Reading section to be the most challenging on the ACT. Perhaps that's because they haven't been taught reading as a skill -- not in the same way they have been taught math as a skill. I have found that by learning and practicing a few simple strategies, most students quickly improve their scores in Reading.

Perhaps that's because they haven't been taught writing as a skill -- not in the same way they have been taught math as a skill. The Essay portion of the Writing section is especially intimidating to students. They benefit from learning three things: the elements of a strong essay; the process for creating such an essay (which involves planning and outlining, before beginning to write; and the basics that essay graders will be looking for. With good coaching and some practice, most students can quickly build confidence and improve their scores in Writing.

History

American History,

American History

I entered college as a history major. I eventually switched my major to economics, and got both a B.A. and M.S. in that subject. However, I never lost my love of history, especially American History. I took many history courses as both am undergrad, then as a graduate student. My coursework covered every period in American history, from colonial days through the Revolutionary War, Civil War, Reconstruction, and the 20th Century. Topics of special interest to me include the events leading up to the Civil War, the Presidency, and the Great Depression. I continue to read extensively on matters involving American history.

ACT Science

I have been an ACT tutor since 2001. In my experience, many students feel great anxiety about the Science section. They are intimidated by technical terms, chemical names, and Greek letters. They benefit primarily from discovering that the ACT Science test doesn't actually require much knowledge of science. It's primarily a test of a student's ability to read charts and graphs, then to apply the data to draw inferences. When the Science test is de-mystified, they can quickly improve their performance.

Great tutor!

Ken was an excellent tutor! He took the time to ask me about my academic background and familiarity with certain topics so he could suggest the most efficient ways for me to study. He always took the time to explain solutions and his thought processes and always made sure I understood the topic before moving on.

Very helpful even on first session

My son worked with Ken on SAT prep and enjoyed the session very much. Ken made the most of this first session by having my son do prep work which helped us really identify the particular benefits and improvements my son is likely to make on retest. Really excited about having him work with Ken.

Very nice and helpful tutor

Ken responded quickly to our urgent call for a tutor to help my daughter prepare for an AP Statistics test. Ken was available the same day to meet for a 2-hour session, and my daughter found him very helpful and able to explain many of the concepts that had been unclear to her.

Great tutor for my son

Ken did a great job of preparing my son for the ACT and SAT. He communicated extremely well with both of us after each tutoring session, letting us know what they accomplished in the tutoring session and what my son needed to work on. I strongly recommend him!

Knowledgeable, patient, and accommodating

Ken worked with me for the 6 week period leading up to my GRE. My test is tomorrow, and I definitely feel more prepared than I would have without Ken's help. He was accommodating to my schedule and flexible in his explanations. I've had tutors won't explain things in a different way if I don't understand it the first time, but Ken did. I have difficulty with math, so that's where we spent most of our time in our sessions. If you're looking to take the GRE and you struggle with math, Ken's your guy.

Knowledgeable and helpful

10/18/17 my son needed help with AP Statistics. Test was this week! Ken was flexible and was able to respond to this last minute request. Very helpful we will most certainly schedule him again!

Excellent fit for my kids and encouraging Tutor

Ken helped my somewhat reluctant children become more enthusiastic about studying for their SAT. He provided pre-work and was very organized. He has a good methodology for specifically helping my children prepare for their upcoming test.

Calm and encouraging

Ken keeps the student active and in charge of their own learning. His style encourages the student to study hard on their own without adding stressful expectations.

Phenomenal Math Tutor

Ken is a wonderful tutor who does an excellent job at finding the best method of teaching for each student. Every tutoring session I felt myself getting more confident in my math test taking skills. I definitely recommend Ken if you are in need of a math tutor!

Very helpful and effective SAT tutor!!!!

Being a student who had quite high scores already on the SAT and wanted to bring them up just that bit higher, I've had tutors before that weren't able to help me improve and simply had me sit there and do practice tests without offering much help or greater insight into the test. Ken was not one of these tutors. He was very good at figuring out what I needed to improve upon and remember during the test, and it never felt like I was wasting my time with him. I just took the SAT again this week and multiple times during the test, I found myself facing problems I was sure I wouldn't have been able to do had it not been for his tutoring. Well worth the time and the money, for certain. Overall excellent!!
