About Sian

Most students enroll in a tutoring program because they are struggling to reach an academic goal, such as graduation, or because they are not achieving a goal set for them by a parent. With this mindset, tutoring comes from a negative place of underachievement and can seem like an onerous task that simply confirms that school and learning are dull, upsetting and unpleasant. My goal is to work with you so that you understand why you struggle, to teach strategies that reduce or eliminate this struggle and to move you from boredom about learning to curiosity about learning. Can an English sonnet ever be interesting? - Yes! Ultimately, that sonnet is all about you.

I am a teacher in the Chapel Hill School system and owner of an education advocacy company. I teach students who struggle in the regular classroom or who are academically at risk and may be in a special education setting. If you spend most of your school day staring out the window or wondering what is happening on social media right now or waiting for the teacher to catch-up with you, then we are made for each other. If you are a student with autism, I will teach by including your inner world of images, lists and curious interests. I am particularly interested in teaching students who struggle to focus, to organize and who have "I can't" and "I won't" as their mantras. I use visual learning strategies, I teach test-taking strategies, and I use context to make what has to be learned relevant to your life. I enjoy watching students move from anxiety about learning, to success in learning. We work hard, but have fun. We are often silly, we are often drawing, and we are always talking and doing.

I have an undergraduate degree in English and Geomorphology, and post graduate degrees in both Clinical Psychology and Geomorphology. I have post graduate training in special education and hold a North Carolina teaching certificate in special/exceptional education. I have taught these subjects up to and including the high school level, Hons. and AP. I have a strong background in teaching literature. I am a writer and published editor. Literature is about identifying and knowing your values more than it is about knowing words. Good literature should make you think about your life and your values.

I'm old, I'm eccentric, and I'm a good teacher.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
