About Sydney

My passion for literature and history led me to desire a career in teaching. I am a recent graduate of The George Washington University, having received my Master's in Victorian literature a semester early. Currently, I am a substitute teacher at a private school in Fairfax, Virginia and hope to obtain a permanent teaching position within the year.
I specialize in English (in addition to my Master's, I also have a Bachelor of Arts in English), but I also received a Bachelor of Arts in History. When it comes to essay writing, my goal has always been to think outside of the box-developing techniques to present an argument in a unique style. In terms of analyzing works of literature, I am a firm believer in facilitating an engaging discussion revolving around how students are interpreting the plot and the development of characters.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

As an English teacher at a private school, I have worked with my students to refine their reading comprehension and writing skills. The majority of my outside tutoring has been test prep.

Reading

As an elementary and middle private school teacher, I worked with my students to improve their confidence when analyzing and responding to reading worksheets, short stories, and works of literature.

SAT Reading

I have worked with many students to improve their reading comprehension skills for both the SAT and the ACT. When it comes to standardized tests, there are particular strategies that prove useful when working through the sections. I help my students assess their weak spots and stronger suits and assist them in coming up with a method that best works for them.
