In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
On a personal level, I am familiar with such because I have been hands-on with three of my grandchildren with ADD/ADHD. On an experiential level, I have filled out many observation sheets for doctor evaluations for students in my classrooms over a twenty year teaching period. I have also been to workshops and read books about how to handle and challenge these students. My grad classes in education have addressed this, as well as countless conferences with school psychologists, parents, and social workers.
I am incredibly patient and have success by asking for short time periods of concentration followed by rewards and praise, refocusing, and making ADD/ADHD students believe they can be successful. I understand their challenges. I am very proud of every step toward mastery, and I let them know it.
