About Kristine

I love helping people learn and accomplish their goals! I earned a B.S. in Psychology, M.Ed. in Special Education/Early Intervention and Family Support, and a Graduate Certificate in Health Education and Promotion. I have experience tutoring a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder from age 8 to 12 as well as 12+ years experience coaching and providing respite care for many other children and teens with special needs. I homeschooled a gifted third grader for one year, and I have tutored homeschooled elementary students (first and third grade) for the last 8 months. I also coach swimming for Special Olympics Orange County and teach exercise to kids at risk for diabetes and their families through Energize at the Kerr Family YMCA. I have worked with kids with different learning styles, and I try to individualize the instruction to play to each student's strengths. I look forward to meeting your family. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

I learned about Autism Spectrum Disorder and Aspergers Syndrome in my Masters program in Special Education. I have 4 years experience tutoring a child with Aspergers. I have worked with other children and teens with Aspergers as a Special Olympics swimming coach, so I am familiar with some of the typical behaviors and communication styles. I try to individualize instruction to the strengths and communication comfort zone of students with Aspergers.

Autism

I learned about Autism in my Masters program in Special Education at UNC-Chapel Hill, including the TEACCH Preschool. I have 4 years experience tutoring a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder, originally using the Loovas method and then individualizing instruction to use his strengths. I have worked with other preschoolers, elementary-aged children, teens, and young adults with Autism as a respite care provider and a Special Olympics swimming coach, so I am familiar with some of the typical behaviors and communication styles. I read research about current developments in Autism, and I am willing to learn new teaching techniques.

Elementary (K-6th)

I earned an M.Ed. in Special Education. I have homeschooled using the Calvert Curriculum for third and fifth grade. I helped homeschool a first grader and a third grader in math, reading, writing, spelling, social studies, art, using a curriculum developed by their parents. I worked with a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder from ages 8 to 12 on study skills and all school subjects, including music. I have run afterschool, summer camp, and exercise programs for elementary-aged students, including some with special needs.

Piano

I studied piano for 10 years, playing mostly classical, with some ragtime. I have tutored beginning piano students (child and adult) who had some lessons but needed additional practice. I try to work with the skills the student has, including reading music or playing by ear and improvisation.

Special Needs

I earned an M.Ed. in Special Education. I homeschooled an academically gifted child using the Calvert Curriculum for third and fifth grade. I worked with a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder from ages 8 to 12 on study skills and all school subjects, including music. I have run afterschool, summer camp, and exercise programs for elementary-aged students, including some with special needs. I have worked with children and adults of all ages as a Special Olympics swimming coach and as a respite care provider. I am very comfortable with individuals with a variety of special needs and individualizing instruction to each student's strengths.

Study Skills

I have excellent study skills developed while I earned a B.S., a Master of Education, and an online Graduate Certificate. My tutoring included study skills to improve attention and organization for an elementary/middle-school student with Austism Spectrum Disorder, and college students with special needs (visual, physical, and intellectual). I also worked with academically gifted home-schooled elementary students on developing study skills for various subjects.

Swimming

I have been a life-long swimmer and swam on a high school swim team. I have coached Special Olympics athletes in swimming for 12 years and I am certified for Aquatics for Special Olympics North Carolina. I worked one-on-one with 2 teens with special needs for 5 summers. I have worked with athletes of all levels of swimming, from basic strokes and breathing to competition level. I know CPR and I have been trained in lifeguarding techniques.
