University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (History)
I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Ancient and Medieval History. My passions are not confined to one or two periods, however, but comprise eras hundreds of years apart and lands separated by thousands of miles. I have taken classes to encompass the first civilizations of Sumeria, the great empires of the Egyptians and Hittites, the monumental temples and civic buildings of Greece and Rome, the thundering hooves of the Mongols under Genghis Khan, the stamping feet of Napoleon's Grande Armee, all the way to the modern era. Because I have studied such seemingly disparate eras, I can easily draw out trends and patterns, as well as the all important "Who, What, When, Where, Why and Significance." I can then teach your student to do the same. Based on their learning style/preference, I tailor each lesson specifically to the student. To help your student, I incorporate a multitude of sources, historical anecdotes, illustrations, maps, ANYTHING to stimulate their interest and help them to better understand (and remember) the subject at hand. I have also acquainted myself with many great art works from around the world from my AP Art History Class in high school, as well as from my own travel experiences in Japan, Australia, Panama, Germany, Greece, Scotland and Tuscany and incorporate them into lessons.
In addition, I am well versed in the technology needed to enhance a student's experience. I can easily navigate through the oftentimes interminable internet to sift through which sources are suitable for research, essays, projects etc. I can also assist with hints and tricks to speed up the process. My time at UNC taught me how to plan, research, and write on a number of different subjects to include, sociology, psychology, anthropology, art history, and literature. Further, in high school, I did well on the AP Biology and Art History Exams, scoring a 4 and 5, respectively.
Outside of history, I am interested in athletics such as running, weight-lifting, swimming and Cross-Fit type exercises. Many of the fitness programs that I have experience with can assist in developing prowess in a number of different sports such as wrestling, basketball and football. I have coupled my experiences in school sports programs with knowledge I have acquired from excellent mentors, running camps, and serving as swimming and running counselors. Further, I pursue my own research so I can fully grasp the multiple facets of the activities that I undertake.
In addition to history and various athletics, I am also proficient in Math, Literature and a variety of Sciences. Check with me to determine if I am comfortable tutoring a certain subject.
My tutoring experience consists in my volunteer work at the local Recreational Center during their after school program. I tutored elementary school students of all ages in Math, Social Studies, Literature, Writing, and Science. On an informal level, I assisted struggling classmates in AP Art History, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and History classes in high school, as well as a number of courses in history, classics, archaeology, and anthropology in college. I am very dependable, well-spoken, charismatic and resourceful. I combine these qualities with passion for teaching in the subject at hand to ensure that your student succeeds. For groups, I charge $25 per hour. For siblings not in the same class getting tutored at the same time, I charge $5 less per pupil ($30 for the 1st, $25 for the 2nd, $20 for the 3rd, etc.).
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I majored in Ancient and Medieval History. At UNC, many of the Classics Courses and Ancient History overlap. I took at least 4 courses that also went towards a Classics degree. In addition, I am also familiar with Ancient Greek Language.
I am a lifeguard and pool manager and have been for the last 8 years. At my job, I worked as a camp counselor instructing campers to swim at a variety of levels. I continue to give informal lessons and suggestions at work every day.
I ran varsity track and went to the State Championships all four years. I was able to place 2nd in two separate relays and earned the Coach's Award for leadership. I also ran on the club track team in college. I trained as a sprinter, middle distance runner, and long distance runner. I also ran Cross Country on a Conference Championship team and earned Most Valuable Runner.
