North Carolina State University (3 BSs)
I have three BS degrees from North Carolina State University, Biological Sciences and Secondary Science Education in 1990, and Chemical Engineering in 1998.
I did my student teaching in 1989 at Jordan High School in Durham. I received my NC Teacher's Certification in 1990, but I allowed it to expire as I chose to work in industry.
My work experience includes 12 years in a molecular genetics laboratory as well as biotech pharmaceutical manufacturing, large scale fermentation manufacturing, and SAS database programming in the clinical trials industry.
My education and experience have provided me with a unique approach to tutoring. Whenever possible, I like to put the complex concepts covered into every day examples. I receive personal satisfaction when I see that light go on in a student's face. You can always see that breakthrough.
I do not provide answers. I provide the tools to work towards the answer. Sometimes, problems need to be approached from different angles.
I also try to foster a relationship with the student's parent/guardian. I am always ready to discuss progress or areas that need work, but I also like to include the student in any such discussion. Also, I have found it advantageous to establish contact with the student's teacher(s), but only after approval from parents and teachers. I currently have several clients that I exchange weekly updates with their teachers. I find it beneficial to the success of the student in and out of the classroom. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I recall my own struggles to learn Algebra in middle school, including my father and I getting so mad at each other. I think this experience gives me great insight and patience into helping students grasp the abstract concepts presented in Algebra.
I have had a lifelong love of biology and nature. Growing up, I wanted to be a marine biologist until my junior year in college. Not that my love lessened, but I began to look at career options, and I found genetics was definitely a rapidly expanding field.
I graduated with degrees in Biology with a Genetics concentration and a Science Education degree. I taught biology during my student teaching, and I have many years of experience tutoring others. I currently have several high school biology students I tutor.
After earning my degree in Biology with a concentration in Genetics, I worked in a molecular biology lab for a total of 14 years. Along with performing molecular nucleic acid and protein assays, I often coordinated my findings with the cytogenetics lab which created karyotypes for patients. I also have experience in forensic pathology, concentrating in determining DNA matches.
Possibly the only college curriculum requiring almost as much math as a mathematics degree, Chemical Engineering requires a strong math background up through differential equations. Much of our classwork involved interacting systems of equations, and the ways they can be manipulated and, when possible, solved.
This is perhaps one of the most important science classes your students will have taken to date. It lays the foundation for future chemistry and physics classes as well as develops the relationship between science and math. It also introduces the student to abstract concepts like the atom and physical forces.
I have taught this class before at the 9th grade level at Jordan High School.
My father taught me basic poker rules and strategy when I was young. For years I played most varieties of draw and stud poker. For the last 10 years, I have concentrated on Texas Holdem, with some experience in Omaha Holdem. I currently play in a local league hosted by World Tavern Poker in which players earn points and play in Regional Tournaments for seats in casino tournaments with cash prizes. I also use poker often when explaining probability to math students.
