About Carol

I like to tutor since it allows me to tailor the subject matter to your "mind-set" and learning style. The tutoring--or coaching time--will begin with your experience as a reader or writer. Say you are very good at math, engineering or computers but hate poetry. However, you need to figure out poems for an upcoming test. To bridge the gap between how you think and how you read poems, we can take something familiar--a math problem or computer system and look at the poem as a closed system or a building. The images are the parts of a whole--they stack up like bricks and "construct" or "shape"" a whole message.

Similarly as essay for the SAT has a "whole meaning" which is achieved by building a structure--an argument--'brick by brick" or paragraph by paragraph. You can approach constructing an argument in different ways, depending on how you mind works. Outlines only work for some people. For other, free association or "brain storming" comes more naturally"; you dump your brains on paper, see what you have, and then shape the "raw clay" of your developing thoughts into a focused essay. The latter method is the "writing as process" approach and includes "sculpting" the clay with each revision.

I taught literature and writing for three years at the high school depicted in the film "Stand and Deliver" and for eight years at the University of California at Irvine, Duke University and the University of North Carolina. During my time in California, I graded essays of incoming freshmen at UC Berkeley to determine who passed out of freshman English.
I also tutor scientists in grant writing and write articles and books on travel, nature and medicine.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
