About Michelle

I love teaching students and take pride in my ability to engage and work with students who struggle academically. I have worked with students that have mild to severe learning disabilities as well as students who struggle social-emotionally. I have directed and overseen alternative and special education schools and taught special education and music to children of all ages - preschool to grade twelve. I am also a Board Certified Music Therapist. I have worked in Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, and Vermont - in urban, suburban, and rural public and private schools. I recently moved to Rutherford County, North Carolina and am eager to get back into teaching!

I have two rescue dogs who I love - a pit bull mix named Missy and a yellow lab/retriever named Wyatt. I like to take them on walks and to the lake since Wyatt especially loves to swim! I love to cook and bake and love the outdoors - especially the mountains. I moved here from the mountains of Vermont and stayed in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina this summer - so beautiful and peaceful! I like to make jewelry and paint furniture as well.

I have a great sense of humor and don't take myself too seriously. I love to incorporate games and technology into lessons and make learning interesting and fun. My specialty is writing and I can also help with reading - for English class and also for reading and writing in other subjects (Social Studies, Science, etc.) I can help with music as well and play guitar, piano, and a little drums. I can also sing a bit and have been known to sing and dance a little if it inspires students!

I love to see students get excited and confident about learning. I like to share my love of learning with students. It makes me happy to see students develop the academic skills, work habits, and pride in their own learning. When students discover that learning can be fun and interesting, it makes my day!

I have taught English in middle school and high school - including College Prep English. I have also taught special education English in grades K-12. I have been a college professor in a program preparing graduate students to become
teachers. I have training in Writing Across the Curriculum, Balanced Literacy, Guided Reading, and teaching English Language Learners.

I have been teaching and overseeing Common Core standards (CCSS) in instruction for the past four years. I have written and overseen Individual Education Plans based on CCSS. I have also written middle school English curriculum aligned with CCSS. I have specialized training in CCSS in special education, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), differentiated instruction, and assessment. As college professor, I also taught college courses based on CCSS and ensured that all of my students used CCSS in lesson design and plans. I have taught English and special education based on CCSS and designed my own lessons in English with CCSS alignment. My supervisors required CCSS to be taught in the classroom and reflected in my lesson design and evaluated my performance on CCSS implementation in the classroom.

I am a certified music teacher with a Bachelors degree from Hartt School of Music/University of Hartford, and play guitar, piano, and some hand drums and flute. I am also a certified music therapist with a Masters Degree from New York University. I have taught PK-12 general and vocal music and some instruments. I can tutor music theory, music history, and some guitar and piano.

I have 53 graduate credits beyond my Masters degree in special education from colleges in Maryland and Massachusetts, and have specialized training in assessment, multiple intelligences, differentiated instruction, and social-emotional learning.

I have taught special needs in PK-12 and also taught special education courses to college graduate students. I have opened and directed two public alternative schools and overseen special education schools as a school administrator. I have helped special education students graduate from high school and enter college; many of these students had a history of school failure and some had even previously dropped out of high school! I have also helped special education students pass state standardized tests; many of these students had never scored proficient on these tests in the past! As a school administrator, I have received awards for bringing special education programs into special education compliance with state departments of education and also received "No Child Left Behind" achievement awards.

I have also worked as a Title I tutor with struggling students in grades 3-8 reading, writing, and math.

Please contact me, I'd love to discuss if we can work together!
