About Jack

Hi! My name is Jack, and I am a rising sophomore at Yale with a first year GPA of 3.84. I am currently planning on majoring in English and education studies but have experience in tutoring a variety of subjects. I really enjoy the experience of working with students and breaking down complex topics into simpler components whether it be a math problem or an essay or standardized test preparation. At each step, I like to engage in dialogue and to clear up any conceptual misunderstandings with additional practice prior to moving onto the next concept or component of an assignment. Through these kinds of conversations, I believe that students can glean much more out of the tutoring than they would be able to in a less interactive format.

I have been practicing this method by teaching and tutoring for several years now in many different capacities. For four years in high school, I served as an ESL tutor for elementary school students and helped them with both reading and math assignments. Additionally, in high school, I worked for two years at my school's math lab where I assisted students on problem sets of all levels from Algebra I through Calculus BC. I also served as a summer camp counselor at a camp which teaches students skills in STEM and encourages them to pursue those fields.

Since arriving at college, I have also engaged in tutoring and teaching opportunities. I have worked with middle school students on science fair projects. As such, I have not only taught them scientific knowledge but have also worked with them on mastering the fundamental skills of experimental design and the scientific method. Finally, I have led several workshops for both middle and high school students on a variety of topics from diversity and inclusion to tragedy to education. From working with many different groups, I have developed a tremendous passion for teaching and enjoy seeing students make tremendous progress.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like any further information or want to sign up for a lesson. I am easy to contact and always try to provide fast responses. Thank you very much for your consideration!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C++

I have taken a class at Yale which focused on C++ for which I received an A. The class taught fundamental programming concepts in the language from the basics to advanced techniques. I demonstrated my abilities to implement these methods in problem sets and exams and consequently feel confident in tutoring students in this language and in helping them overcome potential pitfalls.

College Counseling

I was admitted to 5 highly selective colleges in my own college application process (Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon, and Harvey Mudd). I received personalized feedback from admissions officers at many of these colleges which commented on the strength of my essays. Consequently, I know what makes a compelling college application and can help students in areas from interview preparation to essay editing to presenting their extracurricular activities. I can also assist in the college search process and in finding students colleges which are good matches for them in terms of both academic and other interests.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked extensively with tutoring elementary school students and so know the elements of a typical elementary school curriculum and how to best engage them. In high school, I worked with elementary school students of all grades with ESL for 4 years on all of their assignments from reading to math to science. Additionally, during the summer after Junior year, I served as a summer camp counselor for a STEM-based camp in which I tutored elementary school students in reading and math skills. Thus, from my 4+ years of tutoring experience, I have developed methods for keeping elementary school students interested while simultaneously helping them make academic progress.

Linear Algebra

I have extensive experience with Linear Algebra as I have excelled at two courses in it. The first was done through JHU CTY Online, and the second was a course at Yale on proof-based Vector Calculus and Linear Algebra (I received an A on both courses). Consequently, I possess a firm understanding of fundamental linear algebra concepts and feel able to aptly convey that knowledge to students.

Microsoft Outlook

I have been a user of Outlook for the past 7 years and consequently possess a firm knowledge of all of its essential features. I assisted others at my school with outlook whenever they needed help and thus feel confident at conveying all of the tools and options within Outlook in an easily digestible manner. I believe I could help others with Outlook software no matter what their intended usage of this software

Microsoft Windows

I have been a user of Windows my entire life so know the fundamental tools of the Windows platform. I have also assisted others (friends and families) with Windows issues whenever they've had a problem or been stuck on a given topic. Consequently, I know how to explain topics in Windows to others in a clear and concise manner.

Great feedback.

Jack began helping my son on his Common App. essay. Today was his first session. My son was very pleased. We are both confident that Jack will be able to help us in the College process.
