About Jeannie

I'm an experienced reading, writing, and ESL instructor who has taught both adolescents and adults in high school and pre-college programs. During my undergraduate years, I studied Spanish at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and participated in study abroad programs at El Centro Bilingüe and La Universidad de Las Americas in Mexico. While completing my Bachelor’s, I tutored classmates in English and assisted them with proofreading essays. Later, I completed a Master’s of Education in Bilingual/Multicultural Education through Northern Arizona University. While studying for this degree, I volunteered at a junior high school and taught ESL classes there.

After graduation, I moved to Oregon and began adjunct teaching for a community college in their Adult Basic Skills Program where I taught ESL, PreGED/GED Language Arts, Visual Arts, Graphic Design, basic computer skills, and pre-college Reading/Writing courses. I enjoy teaching ESL and English the most because of the opportunities to help students increase their vocabulary and express themselves creatively through writing.

My first goal when teaching is to raise a student’s confidence in their communicative abilities and expand upon their background knowledge, so that they are able to increasingly take on more difficult assignments. I strongly believe that confidence is the key to succeeding in any subject. In combining high levels of confidence and a well-rounded education, one will have more opportunities for career, social, and personal growth.

Outside of teaching English, I’m also a photographer who enjoys story-telling through visual imagery. I also offer lessons for photography, Photoshop, and Gimp. Additionally, I'm very experienced with Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word. In the courses that I've taught, I also introduced students to these programs, as well as Google Docs and general computer skills. If you are looking for assistance with learning how to use these programs, I'm available for tutoring in these subjects as well.

My students have come from a variety of cultural, socioeconomic, linguistic, and educational backgrounds. I very much enjoy the challenges and successes that come from teaching such a diverse group of students. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding my availability for lessons and I hope to hear from you soon :)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Photoshop

My specialties are creative portraiture, fine art, and fashion photography—for all of my images I do my own retouching. I’ve taught lessons privately and in a high school diploma program for digital editing (Photoshop, Gimp, and Photoshop Elements). Having been a former model and also a painter, I bring these experiences to my work as a photographer, creating colorful compositions. When teaching Photoshop, I emphasize not only the technical aspects of the program, but also the creative side, helping my students create their vision.

English

I've taught the following community college courses for English classes: Writing Fundamentals (WR 095), College Textbook Reading (RD 090), English as a Second Language (ABSD ESL), and Pre-GED Reading/Language Arts (ABSD PRE).

I've taught students whose levels ranged from those beginning to learn English to those who needed extra help in catching up to a Freshman college level for Reading and Writing. In my classes, I emphasize the importance of being patient with oneself, recognizing mistakes as learning opportunities, and having daily practice. These are the keys to being successful at learning any subject.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Master's Degree in Bilingual/Multicultural Education and my studies focused on linguistics and second language learning. I'm experienced with teaching ESL to teenagers and adults as I have taught ESL at both a middle school and a community college. Also, I understand what it's like to learn an additional language as I myself have studied Spanish and have a Bachelor's degree in Spanish. In my classes, I emphasize the importance of being patient with oneself, recognizing mistakes as learning opportunities, and having daily practice in English, as these are all key to being successful in second language learning.

General Computer

I teach basic computer skills at a community college in all of my classes. I incorporate Google Docs, Pixlr, Prezi, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint into my classes so when students finish the course, they have a general understanding of how to use these applications for writing and presenting. Additionally, I teach typing and how to use the internet to my beginning ESL students as a weekly part of the curriculum. In my Graphic Design course, I teach students how to use editing software such as GIMP, and Photoshop.

Outside of teaching, I have used Microsoft office products such as Outlook, Word, Publisher, Excel, Lync, and PowerPoint for jobs such as banking and general office work for over 10 years. I have also trained new hires and co-workers on how to use these programs in addition to other programs such as PeopleSoft, Banner, and Navigator.

Graphic Design

I have taught both Graphic Design and Visual Arts classes for Umpqua Community College's Adult High School Diploma Program in the academic quarters of Fall 2014 and Spring 2015. Also I offer tips and tricks for using software for Graphic Design (such as Gimp, PSE 12, and CS6) on my blog.

Microsoft Publisher

I have used Microsoft Publisher both in the public and private sector. I've used it for creating brochures, flyers, training manuals, and other documents in industries such as banking, higher education, and photography. Additionally, I have trained co-workers on how to use the program. In the Adult Basic Skills classes that I teach, I also show students how to use this program for special projects.

Photography

The genres I specialize in are creative portraiture, fine art, and fashion photography. I owned and operated an independent photography studio for 3 years in the Pacific Northwest. During this time I collaborated with local models and many of our images were published in indie magazines. I’ve taught lessons privately and in a high school diploma program for digital editing and photography. Having been a former model and also a painter, I bring these experiences to my work as a photographer, creating colorful compositions. When teaching photography, I emphasize not only the technical aspects of operating a camera, but also the creative side, helping my students create their vision.

Writing

I've taught the following community college courses: Writing Fundamentals (WR 095), College Textbook Reading (RD 090), English as a Second Language (ABSD ESL), and Pre-GED Reading/Language Arts (ABSD PRE).

I've taught students whose levels ranged from those beginning to learn English to those who needed extra help in catching up to a Freshman college level for Reading and Writing. Additionally, I myself hold both a B.A. in Spanish and a Master's of Education in Bilingual/Multicultural education which focused on linguistics.

Well versed on subject matter and a great personality for teaching!

My experience with Jeannie has been wonderful. I am learning Photoshop Elements, and find her approach very helpful and understandable. Jeannie is patient, listens to my questions, and answers them completely. With the ability to screen-share, I was able to apply what I've learned with Jeannie "watching over my shoulder." What a great way to learn! What a great tutor!
