About Katherine

As a tutor at Dickinson College, I was trained in the most effective ways to improve student writing using techniques for both Arabic and in English. In my own free time I have examined and thoroughly enjoyed reading style manuals and debates over usage. In essence, my goal is not to teach that the Oxford comma is right or wrong, but rather how its use or exclusion can improve your writing.

Having studied Arabic since I was 15 years old, I have had extensive exposure to multiple dialects and cultures, including many Levantine, Egyptian, Gulf, and Maghribi dialects. In 2014 I received the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center Summer Arabic Language and Media (SALAM) Study Abroad Scholarship for a fully-funded government visit to Oman, where I studied both Modern Standard Arabic (MSA or fusha) and Omani dialect. I translate this experience into effective and fun tutoring at all Arabic levels.

The best part of my day is seeing a student’s eyes light up when they finally grasp a difficult concept. That spark, that instant wave of excitement and relief that falls over a student’s face is an undeniable sign of progress and learning. I live for that moment.

I have been an Arabic tutor, Dickinson College, received the 2014 SALAM Study Abroad Scholarship, and have taught College-level Arabic to 360.

I tailor all lessons to individual students using an evaluation and goal-setting strategy for each session. This allows students to see measurable progress after each lesson and remain engaged in their own learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Arabic

I have spent six years as a student and tutor of Arabic. I began as a high school junior taking college Arabic in my free time. I attended two summers of the Middlebury-Monterey summer language immersion for Arabic, then proceeded to college, where I continued my studies and became a tutor for lower-level students. In 2014, I was awarded a fully-funded scholarship from the Omani government to study Arabic and Omani culture. While at Dickinson College, I was consistently asked to tutor students in Arabic, in both one-on-one and group situations, and my students consistently showed improvement across sessions as evidenced by higher test scores and professors' testimonials.

English

Experience writing and editing college and masters-level writing, in-depth knowledge of English grammar and usage.

Film

During my undergraduate career, I took classes on both the History of Film and on Middle Eastern Film, excelling in both areas. For my senior thesis, I analyzed the role of women in contemporary Iranian film as actors and directors, how they negotiated their lives in Iran with their positions in diaspora filmmaking, and how they maneuvered their filmmaking around censorship. I have spent hundreds of hours watching and thinking critically about all kinds of films, from independent documentaries to foreign dramas to mainstream Hollywood blockbusters from all time periods and genres. I am up-to-date on the current trends and directors in American and international filmmaking, as well as with many other eras of cinema. I am also familiar with film-making techniques and jargon.
