About Jordan

I have been lucky enough to have been able to teach, tutor and help many different students of different ages covering several different subject areas. My teaching experience started as a science and math teacher at a K-8 school in Ridgewood, NJ. One important lesson I learned at that school was that all students learn in different ways (visually, auditory, etc.) and that it is the job of a teacher or tutor to utilize different types of materials and teaching methods in helping each student understand the different concepts. For instance in teaching word problems, I believe it is very important to utilize charts and/or diagrams to help students better visualize the proper steps needed to solve the problem.

At this time I also began working at the Huntington Learning Center in Ridgewood, NJ. Here, I had the leadership position of Head Teacher where I not only tutored students from K-12 in math, reading, study skills, grammar and writing but was responsible at times for managing the Center making sure it functioned smoothly. At the Learning Center, it was important that each student achieved a level of proficiency at a certain skill level before he or she could move onto a different concept. For instance an elementary age student needed to show mastery in computing numbers with decimals before her or she could move onto percents. The key takeaway here in formulating my approach in tutoring math or any subject for that matter is the use of diagnostic pretests and post-tests so that I can see whether a student has mastered a concept or needs further work in that area. This is extremely helpful in designing the curriculum for each tutoring session.

Next I had the privilege of teaching at the Plainfield Adult Leaning Center in Plainfield, NJ, I worked with students ages 17-Adult in small groups and one to one in helping them pass the GED exam. Since the GED covers several different subject areas (Language Arts, Writing, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts, Reading and Mathematics), I had to be able to go from one subject to another without any difficulty. Here, my educational background can be a very invaluable asset. I have a degree in Psychology and Certificate in Criminology from Rutgers University. In addition, I earned a degree from the T.C. Williams School of Law in Richmond, VA. Next, I have also received 9 credit hours from William Paterson University. Finally I am certified to teach in the areas of Elementary K-8, Social Studies and Psychology. I want any prospective student to know that my qualifications and background are of the highest level.

After working at the Plainfield Adult Learning Center I began teaching at the Plainfield Alternative High School in Plainfield, NJ to students grades 7-12. The students at this school were enrolled there because they were not being successful in the regular school setting for a myriad of reasons. Here, I learned that no matter what problems a individual student has, each student has the ability to succeed. Here, I would always use positive reinforcement to give students the confidence that there was not any problem he or she would face that was insurmountable. Initially I taught math and social studies to students grades 7-8. Later I taught World History, US History I and II for grades 9-12. In the teaching of math I would often use real world examples such as The Stock Market in teaching math concepts such as solving word problems using percents. Finally, I was the supervisor for student run activities such as a school store and school bank.

My last teaching experience before I retired due to an illness in 2002, was teaching history at Plainfield High School to students grades 9-12. I taught US History I and II, World History, Introduction to Public Policy, American Government and Nature of Politics. The last 3 courses were part of an advanced curriculum that I created that was part of the new School of Public Policy at the high school. In all of my classes, I would requires the students to think critically where they would have to develop their own opinions on a topic in both written (Ex, essay) and verbal (Ex. oral presentation) form. One area that I would continually reinforce is that any essay should be at least 5 paragraphs long and organized properly. When I tutor students in essay writing whether it is for the SAT or for a particular class, I show the students how outlining and mapping can be very effective in not only writing an effective essay but for time management in taking a test. Finally, I was the supervisor of a student political newsletter where the students wrote opinion essays on the issues of the day.

Currently, I work as private tutor and also teach after school classes at an elementary school in Randolph, NJ. As you can see from my background I have taught and tutored students of all ages covering many different subjects. Furthermore, I am very familiar with the SAT and ACT tests and can provide students with the necessary strategies to raise their scores. In closing, with my years of experience I am confident that parents and students who decide to utilize my services will find someone who is committed in creating a path to success for each and every student I work with. Feel free to contact me with any questions you have and I look forward to taking to you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have many years experience teaching and tutoring at the high school level. It is important that students understand the concepts of American history but how these concepts relate to the world. I find this also helps students comprehend events from the past. It is very important that students are able to analyze issues in both written form. In addition my background in law gives me the ability to give students an insight into the Constitution and its application to everyday life and the issues of the day.

Basketball

I have played basketball my entire life and have experience coaching as well. I am very familiar with the sport, understanding different concepts on not only teaching the basics of the game as dribbling, passing and shooting but concepts such as the motion offense and the 1-3-1 zone defense. I can also teach individual skills such as how to box out and foul shooting. I can students at every level and very enthusiastic in my approach.

Recently, I taught chess after school for 8 weeks at a local elementary school in Randolph to students (K-4). Students were taught the rules of the game as well as different moves and techniques. At the end a tournament was conducted. I am confident I can teach the game of chess to students of all ages.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a teacher certified in elementary education, I have many years experience teaching students at that age level. I know students learn in many different ways and incorporate that into the tutoring materials to use. Furthermore I start out with the belief that all students can succeed and use a positive and patient approach when working with students.

Elementary Math

I have many years experience tutoring and teaching math at the elementary level. Math at times can be frustrating to students of this age but I have found a positive and patient approach works the best. In addition I have used real world examples to create both better interest and understanding in the students. For instance I have used the statistics and geometry of football. The importance of budgeting and money management to teach percent and interest. The stock market can be used to teach many different math concepts. Above all the key is to break any math problem down into steps so they can have the confidence of knowing a process to use in approaching a math problem.

Government & Politics

I have a degree in law from the T.C Williams School of Law, University of Richmond. In addition I worked for 10 years as a paralegal. I have incorporated the teaching of government and politics in my teaching of American History and as a separate course at Plainfield High School at the Middle and High School. In addition, I was creator and advisor to a student run political newsletter covering such subjects as the Election of 2000.

Law

I have a law degree from the T.C. Williams School of Law, University of Richmond. In addition I worked for 10 years as a paralegal in a law office. During my years as a teacher at the Public Public Schools teaching American History and U.S. Government at the middle and high school levels I often used my knowledge of the law and the constitution into my teaching. Also, I would explain how the Amendments such as the 1st Amendment impact citizen's lives on a daily basis.

Prealgebra

I am certified as teacher for elementary grades K-8. I have experience teaching pre-algebra concepts to 7th and 8th graders at the Plainfield Public School. In addition, I taught different areas of Pre-Algebra to students from K-12 at the Huntington Learning Center in Ridgewood, NJ, Finally, I taught Pre-Algebra to students at the Adult Learning Center in Plainfield, NJ. My belief that in teaching Pre-Algebra you need patience and the ability to break down every problem into steps that students can follow.

Reading

I have experience teaching and tutoring reading at the elementary and middle school level. Mastery of reading comprehension is important at every academic level. It is not just important that a student be able to read non-fiction and fiction material, but to be able to comprehend it at a high level. Skills such as finding the main idea, drawing conclusions, making inferences, etc. are very important to a student's success in all subjects. I find that using using both written and verbal exercises are very helpful in helping students master these skills.

SAT Reading

I am very familiar with the SAT Reading section. The 3 different sections encompass many different types of questions that I can give the student guidelines in approaching and answering the question in the most effective manner. This is very important as time is limited and knowing the type of question and how to approach it can be very helpful in managing the amount of time a student spends on each question. Finally, I will incorporate diagnostic and practice tests to pinpoint the different areas that the student needs to work on and what materials to use.

SAT Writing

I have studied the SAT Writing Section in depth and I am very confident I can provide students with the tools necessary to reach their score goals. Not only will I explain the concepts into the different areas that make up the Section but I will tips for the students in not only answering different types of questions but to effectively manage time, a big factor in doing well in any section of the SAT. In addition my extensive background in teaching essay writing will help students in both preparing for and writing an essay on the test.

Social Studies

I have many years teaching students of all ages in the social studies area. I believe it is very important that students not only be taught the facts about what happened in the past but it's relation to what is going on in today's world. It is very important that students can express their own opinions on different subjects in the social studies area in both written and verbal form. Finally my background in law gives me an unique insight into insight into teaching the Constitution and it's impact on daily life and the issues of the day.

Study Skills

I have been involved in education for over 20 years and there is nothing more important than study skills. The ability to study for a test or just study for review is extremely important. I am a proponent that a student should be active when studying,. For example, instead of just reviewing or reading notes, I would recommend outlining the notes so the student can focus more on areas he needs to brush up more. Then as the student becomes more familiar with the material, the student can shorten his of her outline and then use that to review just before the test. Another important part of study skills is time management. It is important that the student use his or her time wisely where he or she can focus more on the areas that needs strengthening. In working with students, I would even have them create a diary where the students can record how much time they spent on each subject.

Tennis

I have an extensive background background in both playing and teaching tennis. I was on my high school tennis team and have played tennis almost my entire life. In addition I have experience teaching tennis for many years including being Director of the tennis program at a local day camp for several years. I have experience teaching students of all ages & levels from beginner to advanced.
