I taught ESL in China for 7 years to university students and did some tutoring as well. As much as I liked being in the classroom, I found tutoring an individual much more interesting because I was able to customize each session for the tutee and it involved using all kinds of resources. It was easier to determine what a student needed and the progress with tutoring situations than with a classroom situation.

For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students.
