About Julia

Have you ever asked your French teacher a question and he or she just can't answer it? Have you ever found yourself trying and trying to just say that pesky French R? And why does "eau" sound like "o"? Well, to be honest, I have too. I've been in your shoes, learning French in high school, then college. I've had good teachers and bad ones. And all of this has helped to make me a better teacher. But more than just my own experience as a language learner is important. I've also taught since 1996, sometimes at the college level and for five years in Wake County Schools. What tricks I never thought of on my own for memorizing verbs or vocabulary, I've picked up from the kids I've taught. In fact, I tend to believe that since learning a new language is about making new associations, it's crucial that each student find his or her own system for memorizing the language. Personalizing language learning is key to comprehension.

Like I said, I have a long history of teaching. But I also have personal experience dealing with French and francophone culture. Among courses I've taught, you can find everything from the most basic "bonjour" all the way to advanced grammar for college French majors and AP and IB French in high school. My own personal experience includes living in France as a student, as a teacher and as an au pair in places as cosmopolitan as Paris and as relatively unknown as Collias (an hour or so from Nîmes). For a year I worked in Raleigh in customer service with folks from Quebec, speaking French. And just the other day, I discovered somebody I see on a regular basis is from the Congo. It's a small world and I've bounced around a lot, gaining a lot of experience and culture.

I look forward to working with you soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
