In addition to earning my Ph.D. in U.S. History in December 2012, I have over five years of experience teaching history courses at both the high school and college level including U.S. History, World History, and Western Civilization. I have also served as the primary academic tutor for six N.C. State University student-athletes.
I recently taught three U.S. History courses at Panther Creek High School in Cary. There, I dedicated myself to placing a special emphasis on student learning and development in order to help prepare juniors and seniors for the rigors and expectations of a four-year college, especially with regard to written/oral communication and critical thinking. Since I take very seriously the impact that an effective and thoughtful teacher can make in his or her student’s lives, I am proud of the fact that the end-of-the-year class evaluations by my students were overwhelmingly positive, citing my knowledge of the material, stimulating lesson plans, one-on-one mentoring, and my commitment to leading by example as major strengths of the classes I taught.
I also have experience teaching at the college level as both an instructor and teaching assistant. Due to my innovative teaching methods and my success in improving students' abilities to reason with logic and evidence, I was nominated by the UNC-Greensboro History Department for the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award for the 2009-2010 academic year. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a North Carolina Teaching License for Middle School/High School Social Studies.
