About Barbara

I'm in my second career in teaching adult literacy and ESL. I have taught low- and mid-level ESL classes, as well as US citizenship preparation classes, for Wake Tech Community College.

What makes me excited about tutoring is figuring out where someone is getting stuck and customizing ways to help him move forward. I understand how important it is for some people to have privacy when it comes to learning (or re-learning), which is one of the reasons why private tutoring is a good idea. I've found that often the first thing that needs to be done is to lower the discomfort factor of being new at something. I'm currently studying Spanish; I understand how scary it can be to work with a new language as an adult.

As a private tutor, I can jointly develop a lesson plan and use a textbook, but I can also stop, let go of the lesson plan, and seize what is called "the teachable moment." My student from Japan and I once spent part of our lesson in the supermarket! That kind of creative freedom enhances my interest in being a tutor and, I think, makes me a better teacher.

I have worked with adults who needed to improve their English speaking skills, either for professional reasons, or for conversational "survival" skills to make their lives in the US more pleasant. I like sharing my culture, my interests, and my life in Cary, and I appreciate being able to learn about my students' lives. In formal conversation or in informal chatting, I think we all have a lot to share.

Thanks for your consideration!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am certified to teach English as a foreign language to adults. I have taught beginning to intermediate group ESL classes, as well as US citizenship preparation classes, in Raleigh, NC. I also tutor private students in the fundamentals of English--reading, writing, listening, speaking. My focus has been on students who wish to concentrate on their speaking ability, whether for professional development, public speaking, or for conversational, "survival" skills. I will use a textbook and prepare formal lessons, if a student wants, but I've been known to take students on field trips to practice English speaking in various settings: shopping malls, farmers' market, restaurants, and paddle boarding, among others. I love discussions about cultural similarities and differences, and would welcome the chance to learn from a student while teaching. Thanks for considering me as your tutor!

USCIS

For the past 3 years I have teaching US citizenship preparation classes at a local community college. The classes are directed to students who are ready to apply for naturalization but who need to understand and practice the N-400, the 100 civics questions, and selected reading and writing vocabulary. We frequently discuss English pronunciation issues. Frequent practice is one of the keys to being ready for the interview.
