About Michelle

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but a lighting of a fire." -William Butler Yeats
Kids naturally love to learn. It's in how they explore the world and how they discover. The challenge of education is to keep that love fresh and new when the learning gets more difficult and more detailed. I feel like the best way to find the balance is to encourage kids to ask as many questions as possible and to look for as many answers as possible on their own. Sometimes that can be as simple as letting the kids pick the topic of a given assignment or to choose one of several assignments based on a single topic. Lessons should as often as possible be guided around how a child learns, especially in a smaller setting like homeschooling. It's hard to do this with larger classes with many learning styles, but a kid who learns best by reading material isn't going to do as well as they could in a setting that requires them to listen to a lecture and take notes. I like to encourage kids to seek their own education while introducing them to traditional elements (particularly in language arts where certain classic books are expected in upper grades).
I am a psychology major, but my specialties are math and English. I make math more accessible and less dreary for students of all ages. I was a reporter for two years for my college newspaper, and I helped in the APA writing lab for the psychology department. I can help students express themselves through writing, as well as helping them build strong prose. I have played clarinet for sixteen years and was also a music major for four years. With that comes a broad base of music knowledge and writing skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

Almost all of my students in the last couple years have been ADD or ADHD. I've successfully helped them learn to study better and raise their grades. I prefer working with this particular population because these kids can come up with some of the brightest ideas when their focus strays from the assignment at hand. It's a fun challenge to guide the students into using those ideas in their assignments.

Algebra 1

I have been successfully tutoring algebra since 2010, including several occasions of "Oh, this isn't so bad after all!" coming from my students.

Algebra 2

I teach kids to not over-think their approach to algebra and to be methodical in their practices.

Ballroom Dancing

I have been ballroom dancing for approximately a year and a half, with two major successful performances and a competition with one performance. I regularly help newer students learn and strengthen basic skills in dancing.
I have over 20 years of general dancing experience with 16 total years of dancing lessons.

Bible Studies

I took several religious studies courses in college, mainly focusing on the Christian Bible. The classes focused on the academic and traditional approaches to the canonical, apocryphal, and Gnostic texts. I also learned approaches to studying other disciplines through the lens of the Bible.

Career Development

I spent two years in a career counseling office, learning how to help people apply for jobs, schools, and internships. I'm excellent at resumés and essays and teaching job hunters how to show their best qualities on paper.

Chemistry

Chemistry is most often just math in a different hat, and it can help to show students how to approach chemistry in that light. I show students as much how to study chemistry on their own as I answer their questions from class and about homework.

College Counseling

I spent two years in a career counseling office, learning how to help students apply for jobs, schools, and internships. I'm excellent at resumés and essays and teaching students how to show their best qualities on paper.

Cooking

I have a lot of years of experience cooking at home and loved it enough take a couple culinary classes in university. I am primarily a baker, but I like to have fun with recipes and especially enjoy helping children learn the importance of learning to make healthy and tasty meals at home.

Elementary (K-6th)

I took elementary education classes in college and spent a two semesters working with elementary age students in the classroom. I used music for one semester and was a teacher's assistant for the second semester.

Geometry

I work with students to help them not overthink geometry and to see the simpler algebra that goes along with it.

Grammar

I worked on the school paper in middle school, high school, and college both as a writer and as a peer editor. I assisted in the writing lab for the psychology department of my university, as well. I have resources that make building solid essays easier and more efficient.

Music Theory

I was a music major in college and Enjoyed my classes. I also scored high in the classes. I still frequent my books to keep material fresh because I enjoy retreading the material. I also sketch melodies and four-part music from time to time.

Salsa Dancing

I have six years of salsa experience. I regularly assist newer students in learning and strengthening basics of salsa. Many other students in my current studio use my practice sessions as training.
I have over 20 years of general dancing experience, with 16 years of lessons.

Special Needs

I have education experience geared towards working with people with special needs, both from my music therapy classes and my psychology classes. I recently spent a year working full time in one-on-one help with individuals with special needs, and many of my students in the last three years have had ADD or school anxiety. I've learned how to help students deal with their own needs and learn how they learn best.
