Kids naturally love to learn. It's in how they explore the world and how they discover. The challenge of education is to keep that love fresh and new when the learning gets more difficult and more detailed. The best way to find the balance is to encourage kids to ask as many questions as possible and to look for as many answers as possible on their own. Sometimes that can be as simple as letting the kids pick the topic of a given assignment or to choose one of several assignments based on a single topic.
Lessons should as often as possible be guided around how a child learns, especially in a smaller setting like homeschooling. It's hard to do this with larger classes with many learning styles, but a kid who learns best by reading material isn't going to do their best potential in a setting that requires them to listen to a lecture and take notes. I like to encourage kids to seek their own education while introducing them to traditional elements (particularly in language arts where certain classic books are expected in upper grades).
My undergraduate degree is in Women and Gender Studies, and I was a music and psychology major for the first several years of college, but my specialties are math, science, and English. I make math more accessible and less dreary for students of all ages. I was a reporter for two years for my college newspaper, and I helped in the APA writing lab for the psychology department. I can help students express themselves through writing, as well as helping them build strong prose.
I have played clarinet for many years, both as part of ensembles and as a hobby on my own, and I was a music major for four years. With that comes a broad base of music knowledge and writing skills. Music is mathematics given expression, and the bridge between the two is one of my favorite places.

History

American History,

American History

American History is all about understanding connections between events. While memorizing when events took place can be cumbersome, the important stuff is actually the causes and effects of these events-especially in APUSH-and that can be the hardest part of the course. I help students understand these connections and why they're important.

Bible Studies

I took several religious studies courses in college, mainly focusing on the Christian Bible. The classes focused on the academic and traditional approaches to the canonical, apocryphal, and Gnostic texts. I also learned approaches to studying other disciplines through the lens of the Bible.

Chemistry is most often just math in a different hat, and it can help to show students how to approach chemistry in that light. I show students as much how to study chemistry on their own as I answer their questions from class and about homework.

Precalculus

Precalculus is often like algebra 3, with more in-depth manipulations of the rules that students have built and worked with since pre-algebra. Often, it can be hard for students to break that down in a classroom setting, so I take advantage of 1:1 time with students to help them learn in a way that makes sense to them.

ADHD,

ADHD

Almost all of my students in the last couple years have been ADD or ADHD. I've successfully helped them learn to study better and raise their grades. I prefer working with this particular population because these kids can come up with some of the brightest ideas when their focus strays from the assignment at hand. It's a fun challenge to guide the students into using those ideas in their assignments.

I have education experience geared towards working with people with special needs, both from my music therapy classes and my psychology classes. I've learned how to help students deal with their own needs and learn how they learn best.

Worth meeting with her

My daughter liked the way Michelle approached the session and the way she explains the material. Will definitely continue to meet with her. Thanks so much to Michelle!

Connects very well with my son.

My son really likes Michelle. She is a "gamer" and that makes her really cool in his eyes. She explains math in a way that he can understand and makes him want to learn. He is doing MUCH better since she started working with him 2 weeks ago.
