About Isaiah

Hello and thank you so much for considering my tutoring services! My name is Isaiah Ellis... I'm a first year graduate student at UNC-Chapel Hill and a patient, upbeat, and effective tutor in writing (for ANY DISCIPLINE), and in subjects within the humanities and social sciences (you can find my full list of services elsewhere in my profile). I would be honored to serve as a resource for you, or your high school or college student.

Because of my experiences in college and as a tutor, I find it's more effective to focus on technique rather than providing easy answers. In other words, my tutoring strategy is to help you (or your student) learn writing, editing, and critical thinking tools as I help you with specific assignments. That way, you'll continue to improve your performance in your humanities/social science classes, and write papers, book reports, and lab reports with good structure, focus, and clarity, even after you no longer require my services.

Here's some more information about my qualifications:

I graduated from Trinity University (San Antonio, TX) in Spring 2015 with an overall GPA of 3.78, after having completed over 80 formal writing assignments. In my time at Trinity I wrote over 80 formal papers for diverse courses ranging from religious studies, history, and English literature, to anthropology, geoscience, and even astronomy (in other words, no matter what class you or your student need to write or research for, I'm prepared to help). I also served as a "peer tutor" twice in first-year writing workshops, where I facilitated class discussions, edited and graded student papers, and occasionally led classes on writing and editing techniques. In this experience I encountered students with a wide range of writing experience, strengths, and weaknesses.

In sum, I have a diverse arsenal of disciplinary knowledge and tutoring experience as well as research, writing, and editing techniques, all of which will be fully available to you if you'd like to hire me. I would be honored to be of service!

Thanks again for visiting, and I hope to here from you soon!

Best wishes,
Isaiah

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have extensive writing and editing experience (including two 30 page papers).

As a junior in college I was nominated by professors for an information literacy prize, and was awarded 4th place out of over 200 applicants.

I have received two summer research grants to work with historian Dr. Angela Tarango (religion department) at Trinity, and over the course of those summers I gained valuable insights into historical research methodologies.

Anthropology

I have an urban studies minor at Trinity, which is housed in the anthropology/sociology department. I have taken four courses listed in the anthropology department and taught by anthropologists, including Introduction to Anthropology, Medical Anthropology, Global Cities, and Anthropological Imagination. Through these courses I've become familiar with the history and nature of the discipline as well as its theory and method. I've also become familiar with subsets of anthropology, like Medical Anthropology and the ethnography of cities in the Global South.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar for just over 8 years, including in a band signed to 9 Lives Records (based in Ashland, KY). I have had several different guitar teachers over the years, and thus have had the opportunity to learn a variety of teaching methods and techniques.

Public Speaking

I have presented papers and research projects at undergraduate conferences at Trinity, Syracuse University, Rhodes College, and (later this Spring) Eastern Washington University. I have received formal training in a first year seminar, but have had considerable private coaching from professors and from my father, who is a retired professor and has had hundreds of speaking engagements across the globe throughout his life. What I lack in formal training I make up for with considerable experience and coaching tailored to academic settings.

Religion

I am a religious studies major at Trinity, with a major GPA of 3.97. I have taken more than 10 religion classes in a variety of subjects (New Testament, Jewish Tradition, Asian/Japanese Religions, Native American Religions, Christian Traditions, Religion in the U.S., Gender and Religion, Theory and Method in the Study of Religion, and more). I have recently been accepted to two religious studies Ph.D. programs: University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (recently ranked the #1 religious studies Ph.D. program in the country by U.S. News & World Report), and the University of Texas at Austin. I was also a finalist for admission into Yale University's Ph.D. in American Religious History.

Writing

I have written 83 formal papers in my time at Trinity (so far), which contributed significantly, and sometimes entirely, to my course grades.
Overall GPA: 3.78
major GPA: 3.97

I have taken two intensive writing workshop courses at Trinity, and have been asked by faculty to return as a peer tutor, twice, to help teach first-year students good writing technique.
