About Trevor

Hello! I am a Ph.D. Candidate in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's History Department. My doctoral research focuses on modern Eastern Europe and Russia (I won't trouble you with the details, but if you're interested, let me know!). My training as a historian requires me to critically engage texts, use them to formulate and corroborate compelling arguments, and present my findings to a larger audience, both orally and in writing. These are crucial life-skills that I help my students to attain as well. I've also spent countless hours reading what other historians have already written, and strive to be a good resource for knowledge about the human past. My academic interests range beyond history into the fields of philosophy, politics, economics, music, and art, all of which I like to incorporate into my work as an educator and a scholar.

Having spent over 6 years studying Russian--including two summers of intensive study in St. Petersburg, Russia, and 10 months of living in L'viv and Kyiv, Ukraine, as a Fulbright fellow--I possess advanced Russian (and Ukrainian) language skills, and am prepared to tutor beginner- to intermediate-level students in these languages.

I am an accomplished writer with publications in peer-reviewed academic journals. I enjoy helping students appreciate the power of the written word in their own lives. As a tutor and instructor, my aim is to help students of history and related disciplines to organize their thoughts, craft strong thesis statements, and present their case clearly and logically on the page. I also facilitate the critical reading of different kinds of sources to help students uncover these sources' deeper layers of meaning, place them in their historical contexts, and appreciate the perspectives and intentions of their authors. Reading and writing can (and should) be eminently fun and rewarding activities for every student.

I work as a teaching assistant in large history courses here at UNC-CH, where I lead discussions, grade papers, give the occasional guest lecture in the auditorium, and provide one-on-one help to undergraduate students. I also have had a few semesters of experience tutoring UNC's student-athletes.

As a teacher, I strive to provide students with a positive learning environment, encouraging them to succeed, helping them develop good study habits, holding them to high standards, and praising their hard-earned accomplishments. I believe in active rather than passive learning. That is, I do not simply bombard my students with knowledge, vainly expecting it all to "stick," but provide them with tools and advice as they follow their own, unique path to personal enlightenment. In this sense, I see my role as a "guide on the side" rather than a "sage on the stage."

It would be an honor to tutor you or your child!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

European History

I am a Ph.D. Candidate in the History Department of UNC-Chapel Hill with years of coursework and research under my belt, including as a Fulbright fellow in Ukraine (2014-15). I have published several articles in peer-reviewed academic journals, and have experience as a teaching assistant and tutor of history at UNC. As an undergraduate at Portland State University I majored in History, graduating summa cum laude with departmental honors. I have received various awards, honors, and grants for my work as a historian of modern Europe, Russia, and the Soviet Union.

Russian

My experience includes over six years of coursework and use of Russian at Portland State University, UNC Chapel Hill, and Duke University, 10 months of daily use in L'viv and Kyiv, Ukraine, as a Fulbright Fellow, and two intensive summers of study at Saint-Petersburg State University in Russia. As a historian of modern Russia and Ukraine, I often consult Russian-language sources in my work and am quite familiar with the language's complicated grammar and vocabulary. For those interested, I am also proficient in Ukrainian.
