Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I have worked as a habilitation technician for A Small Miracle for 6 months, and have worked with many individuals with autism. My work includes teaching/tutoring in spelling, math, money counting, speech therapies, and life skills. I enjoy working with autistic individuals and have the skills and patience to help them succeed.

Elementary (K-6th)

During my undergraduate career as a psychology major, I took a number of developmental classes as well as a class devoted to the concept of learning.

I also worked for 3 summers at the Gow School Summer Program as a counselor and events coordinator, which allowed for daily interaction with students of this age for 6 weeks in an academic and social atmosphere.

I have experience tutoring elementary aged students in math and English, and have explored many ways to tailor subject studies to the individual student. After identifying the student's learning style, I strive to help them utilize their strengths to improve on their weaker areas. I am very patient, which is valuable with younger students, and I make certain that the student always feels confident and comfortable in their own abilities.

Study Skills

As a psychology major in college, I took many classes that explored concepts of learning. Certain note-taking, studying, and test-taking methods work very well for some students, but not for others. I am well equipped to determine the best strategies for students on a personal level, and to assist them with polishing their techniques, building self-confidence, and being patient with themselves as they grow academically.

I spent three summers working at the Gow School Summer Program for students with learning-based difficulties. Working as a counselor for these students in a boarding-school setting, I was able to interact with them during all times when they were not in class and was able to experience firsthand the benefits of one-on-one remedial learning for students that had fallen behind in their regular schools and were often given far less attention than they needed.

When it comes to study skills, improvement is based on becoming more of an active and engaged learner in class, while studying, and outside of the classroom setting. This consists of making connections beyond the material itself, learning and being comfortable with the most appropriate study techniques, and familiarizing with test-taking strategies.

Most importantly, patience and positivity must permeate the tutoring session so that the student acquires these traits.

Great tutor

Karin is a very professional, patient and loving person who makes it a point to find just the right combination to work with each individual child at their own level of learning. We have found her to be extremely helpful to our grandchild and she has an incredible ability to "feel" where the child is coming from. She is sweet, personable and fun to be with yet accepts her responsibility as a tut
