***2022 update: I am only taking 7th-9th graders for Pre-Algebra or Algebra / Integrated Math I-II and am only meeting with students at the Weaver Street Market patio in Carrboro after 4pm weekdays or flexible weekends. I am vaccinated and boosted and will wear a mask, and expect the same of the student and any adults involved in face-to-face communication with me.***

I completed a doctorate in Mathematics Education at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. I work in designing math tests for end-of-grade exams in grades 3-12, so I am very familiar with content standards and how students are assessed. I have a master's degree in Secondary Mathematics Education from American University in Washington, DC and am a fully credentialed teacher. I taught 8th grade Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, and Geometry for two years and have over ten years of tutoring experience in all levels of math (including K-12, college, and test preparation). Additionally, I was a mathematics major as an undergraduate which affords me the rich content knowledge needed to explain math conceptually in many different ways. I scored a perfect 800 on the quantitative section of the GRE and co-authored an SAT math preparation book designed for students aiming to get a perfect score on the SAT (on Amazon, search for "SAT Math Prep 800: Challenge Yourself to a Perfect Score").

My tutoring philosophy centers around teaching for conceptual understanding while integrating in problem solving skills and real-life applications relevant to the student. I am passionate about math and love sharing my enthusiasm with students.

Please feel free to send me a message with what subject you are interested in and how much tutoring you anticipate needing. I look forward to working with you!

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of my favorite topics to tutor because it is the subject I taught as a full-time teacher. I focus on making Algebra meaningful to students by using real-world examples applicable to students' lives, and I emphasize conceptual understanding over memorization. This teaching philosophy results in long-term retention of concepts that prepares students for more advanced math.
Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry builds a foundation of proofs and logic that students will apply to more advanced math. I previously taught Geometry as a full-time teacher and have deep content knowledge that allows me to jump right in to whatever material a student is learning that week, while focusing on building skills in proofs and logical reasoning.

Extremely patient and knows her math!

Our daughter has been working with Audra for 2 months now. She has gained so much more confidence in learning geometry! Her grades have really improved. She made an A on her last test! We are thankful for the work Audra has done with our daughter. She is very patient and really explains math well.
