About Jon

Bio

Being raised outside of Philadelphia somehow led me to UNC Chapel Hill and I never thought I would be here to this date. But I love it as here is where I found my passion in both Music and Education. My main instrument is guitar and main subject is any math from K-college. I also play piano, bass, percussion, and sing as well. When I was at PACE Academy for 8 years, I taught Algebra I, Geometry, Technical Math I and II, Advanced Functions and Modeling, Algebra II, and Music.

When I was at PACE Academy for 8 years, I taught Algebra I, Geometry, Technical Math I and II, Advanced Functions and Modeling, Algebra II, and Music.

Along with mathematics and music, I also have a background in video/audio engineering which helps me keep the student interested. I'm an effective communicator and a creative problem-solver with strong leadership, collaboration and management skills that deliver success to challenging subjects and hurdles for students.

Here are some testimonials to give you an idea:

Sharon S., Assistant Dean/Director of Teacher Education, North Carolina Central University (colleague)

“Jon is a great person with which to work . He is a dedicated teacher of mathematics and music. He has worked with both of my children as high schoolers in mathematics and one in music as well. He used to teach at the school where one of my children attended and where I was on the Board of Directors. He has a gentle, supportive nature in working with others. He is strong in content knowledge and in musical ability.” April 19, 2012

“Jon is a fantastic teacher and multi-talented musician. Jon instructed my teenage son in both math SAT preparation and keyboard and other instrument instruction. He has a remarkable ability to transform a sullen, "bored" teenager into a motivated, creative, excited learner. I highly recommend Jon for any position that interests him.” August 23, 2011

I designed, wrote, edited, and proofed K-12 testing elements for both paper pencil and online testing based on state standards and blueprints, namely PARCC and the Common Core. I created the opportunity for TE21 to format online problems that adhered to company practices, professional standards, and the needs of all platforms. I also produced spreadsheets with complex functions to expedite the entire team’s workflow, improving the quality of the content and reducing errors by roughly 23%, and worked with the sales team to understand customer needs and share up-to-date research regarding writing practices such as aligning content, item length, difficulty and DOK levels to meet grade-level expectations.

I have tutored children of all ages and I'm great with kids. They love me and I can usually reach through to them in their own way. I emphasize music or games in the process to help brain development at earlier ages (really any age but its most beneficial when you're young. My success as a teacher at a charter school and a private tutor has been outstanding and it won't stop short here.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

100% of my students passed the EOC for 4 out of the 5 years I taught at a school that acknowledges the hard-comings of students with poor reading comprehension, lack of interest, and anything that gets in the way of that degree. I was the head of the math department and taught subjects including Algebra I, Algebra II, Pre-Algebra, Trigonometry, Advanced Functions and Modeling, Discrete Mathematics and studied subjects from Abstract Algebra through Differential Equations in college at UNC-Chapel Hill. If it's math, I can help. Looking forward to working with you.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I taught Pre-Algebra II for two years and all my students passed the EOC. I have a way of finding a students weakness and using it to teach the material using things the student is interested in. Very cliche, but it works when executed correctly.

I have always loved geometry and in the past 5 years of teaching, I believe I mastered teaching it. I am able to find a students shortcomings in any area pertaining to the subject and find a way that makes sense to the students. Let me know if I can be of assistance :) -Jon

Piano

I taught music for 5 years at a local charter school. Guitar, Keyboards, Bass and Percussion were the focal points of the performance section of the class, but all my students learn at least some basics on the piano as I believe this is the most efficient way to learn the music theory behind music. Along with music theory, effective drills, ear training, rhythmic notation, melodic notation and much more is an OPTION. I'm here for what you want to learn :)

60 questions, 60 minutes. Algebra, Trigonometry, and Geometry. In 5 years of teaching at a charter school, 98% of my students passed an 80-question EOC. This success comes from my ability to bring math to the student, the way THEY understand it and can relate to it.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

All of my high school students said this was their favorite class and it didn't even feel like a math class. I cannot take all the credit for this, as it is loaded with very simple concepts that by new, but will also seem like rules to a game... and ya know what, they are! If you are still wondering what the heck discrete math is, its as simple as math which is solely based on discrete, separate number values. 1, 2, 3, 4... you know... counting! This is as opposed to a continuous concept such as all the values of x where 5 < x < 19. I taught Discrete Math for 4 years and did quite exceptionally in preparing my students for the EOC while making the class fun!

I minored in jazz studies and played guitar at UNC Chapel Hill while maintaining several live acts, tutoring, and eventually heading the Music Department at PACE Academy where I currently teach. ADHD

ADHD

From 2001-2006 I taught at a local charter school called PACE Academy. This school consisted of a small number of students (50-200) with over 50% ADD or ADHD. Fortunately I've always been great with small children and pets, and first meeting (and thereafter) no exception. Since I've been self-employed I continually have been tutoring students one-on-one, and this is really what most students with ADD need. It's pretty much a one-on-one IEP you would find in our public schools, which I am very familiar with creating during my 5 years as a teacher. My own experience with not only ADHD students, but anyone I teach, is finding out what each individual's hobbies and interests are, their distinct and most effective learning patterns, and their individual needs and levels of comprehension. After I figure all this out, structure throughout the course is very important, and I find it best to do with the student so it's something they are willing to try and commit to. All these methods I've learned have had great impact on the students' grades and general lifestyle as they leave the course with self-confidence. Thanks for reading and be in touch if you are looking for a very reliable and effective tutor. Good luck with everything, Jon
