About Michelle

Teaching is the best job that I could ever have. As the daughter and granddaughter of teachers, I couldn't imagine doing anything else.

I have a decade of teaching experience, having mainly taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. I began my teaching career in Oregon, but have been teaching 3rd and 4th grades in Sanford, North Carolina for the past year and a half. As the wife of an Army soldier, I appreciate the opportunity to travel and continue my career in a new place. It has been both exciting and rewarding.

As a current teacher, I am well-aware of the "summer slide" that occurs when students are not in school for the summer months. My hope is to continue the progress that your child was making in May and June, and then help him or her be ready for the upcoming grade.

I specialize in tutoring reading and writing, but also all components of language arts (vocabulary, spelling, grammar). To best meet your child's needs, I will assess his or her abilities in the content area which will then provide me with a starting point as to how to move forward with instruction. I strive to make learning both fun and interactive.

To ensure that students have a quiet and comfortable place to work with me, I am able to travel to convenient locations such as the public library or a local coffee shop. However, if you have another location in mind that would be beneficial, I am flexible.

I also try to be flexible with time, especially during the summer months. I have a 24-hour cancellation policy, and can do make-up sessions.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping your child achieve success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

For the past two years, I have had to design unit plans, lesson plans, and create assessments using the Common Core Standards as a guide. For every lesson, I use the Standards to guide my teaching practice and focus the learning targets so that they are understandable for my students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified elementary school teacher with 10 years of experience. I have taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades during the regular school year, and 1st grade summer school for remedial literacy concepts.
