I have a PhD from Rutgers University and a degree in Sociology from University of Cincinnati. I have been teaching and tutoring college students and adult learners in the community for 40+ years, and my students tend to do well due to my student-centered teaching style. I help students build on the strengths they already have, even when they aren't aware that they have them when we start working together! I am interdisciplinary across the social and behavioral sciences, with experience in history, philosophy, women's studies, and small business development as well.

I am familiar with most standard textbooks in these fields, and can refer students to associated literature on whatever topic is of interest or is being problematic. I tend to teach research, writing, and study skills as we go along, so that students develop capacities that will continue to serve them after our interaction has ended. I charge $45/hr and require 12 hrs notice of cancellations. I expect students to participate in framing an individualized tutoring strategy and then do the work they agree to, so as to succeed in meeting the objectives of our work together.

I am not only familiar with the academic side of these disciplines, I have been an active practitioner in them my entire working life. I wrote the only comprehensive history of the U.S. civil rights movement between 1959 and 1965 published to date, and have been a public interest/social justice advocate both inside and outside of our institutional systems. I not only teach from books, I have had hard, first-hand experience in the systems and dynamics I teach about.

I would be happy to discuss your particular needs and, if I can (and I will be honest about this), help you frame a strategy to effectively address the issues that have prompted you to seek help.

Criminal Justice

I have been both teaching and interacting with the criminal justice field my entire adult life, including service as Special Assistant to the Chairman of the NYC Commission on Human Rights, a law enforcement agency charged with investigating and prosecuting civil rights violations. For the past several years I have been developing and teaching courses at Eastern Kentucky University's College of Justice and Safety with special focus on diversity across the justice system, diversity issues specifically in corrections, police-community relations, and the role of gender in contemporary terrorism.

Considerable graduate coursework in cultural anthropology and experience in cross-cultural and multi-cultural studies. Doctorate includes anthropology concentration as part of interdisciplinary understanding of human and social development and behavior. Comfortable with both theory and field work.
Political Science,

Political Science

I have a doctorate in Political Science from Rutgers University and have been teaching political science and several of its sub-disciplines for over 40 years. I have also worked in the public sector, served as consultant to elected and appointed officials, and have been a public interest advocate my entire adult life. I am not only familiar with American government, but have specialized at various times in comparative government, political theory and international relations.
Social Studies,

Social Studies

While Rutgers titled my PhD "Political Science," it was interdisciplinary across the social and behavioral sciences, with my doctoral research focused on public policy and the American family. If appropriately titled, it would have been called "Human and Social Development and Behavior." I have been teaching at the college level in interdisciplinary social science departments for over 40 years, as well as in sociology, political science, women's studies, and African American studies, into which I have also integrated principles of anthropology and social psychology. I am comfortable with any aspect of "social studies" at any educational level.
