About Tawanna

I am originally from Georgia. I studied English at the University of Georgia. While in college, I was a substitute teacher and did a lot of volunteer work as a mentor/Big Sister to two girls from low income families. Right after college, I worked in corporate as an Inside Sales Executive. Around 2006, I began tutoring middle school students with special needs in reading comprehension. I discovered a love for teaching, and I changed careers to become a reading teacher for elementary school students. I love to read. I have read and studied books from all genres, and written by people of different ethnicities. I am also a writer, and love to teach creative writing. Currently, I am working on a novel of three short stories.

Now, I am obtaining a Masters of Arts in Teaching from University of North Carolina, Charlotte with a focus on secondary English. I am excited to discuss literature at the advance level, and prepare high school students for college and career readiness. I have tutored 1-12th grade students for 10 years now with reading comprehension and basic math skills. I love to tutor students and adults because I love to teach, and I love to help others reach their goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

My major in college was English. I have been an avid reader and writer since elementary school. I have tutored and taught children in reading comprehension, phonics, grammar, and writing for over eight years.

Phonics

I taught phonics for four years to elementary students. Students learn to word decode and literal comprehension of sentences. Eighty percent of my students were reading on or above grade level by end of school year. And I taught phonics using the SAR Distar program. I studied English at the University of Georgia.
