About Suzanne

My name is Suzanne A. I am a Spanish teacher with 18 years experience. I started teaching Spanish at a public high school in Virginia. After three years at that school I took a job as a middle school Spanish teacher. That school was a small, private institution. I taught there for four years. I decided to explore teaching elementary school, so I became employed at a large, public school. I developed the Spanish program for grades K - 5. An opportunity arose to teach English as a Second Language at another high school, so I eagerly took on that challenge. After two years I decided that I enjoyed being in the high school environment, but that I preferred teaching Spanish. I returned to teaching high school Spanish for another two years. My family moved to North Carolina in 2010, and I started working at a Catholic middle school. I stayed with that school for five years. I went back to teaching in a public high school in 2015. I am teaching Spanish once again.

Spanish is fascinating! Learning Spanish is useful in so many ways. I have found that my command of English vocabulary and grammar improved as I became fluent in Spanish. I emphasis this benefit during my lessons. It is rewarding when students make connections between English and Spanish. My students also tell me, upon taking the SAT, that their knowledge of Spanish helped them succeed on the English part of the test.

I look forward to working with you! I enjoy teaching in a classroom environment. I also find it rewarding to teach one-on-one. Tutoring allows the student to ask questions without the possibility of feeling embarrassed. It also allows me to explain subject matter in an in-depth fashion. In addition, teaching in an environment other than the classroom, such as in a library, often encourages focus on the topic. It reduces distractions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I excelled in my English classes in school. I was the reporter for my high school's student counsel association. I was also in the journalism club. I have superlative proofreading and editing skills. My experience as an ESL instructor allowed me to share my knowledge of English with high school students and adults who were eager to learn the language.

Spanish

I majored in Spanish at VPI & SU. After I graduated with my B.A. in Spanish and Communications, I worked in banking and later in the furniture industry. In both jobs I utilized my Spanish speaking skills almost daily. I became a Spanish teacher and have worked in education for nearly 20 years. I have taught the entire age range of learners, from kindergarten to community college.

Vocabulary

One of the best ways to build vocabulary, in any language, is through reading. I am an avid reader. To encourage this interest, I started a book club in my neighborhood. In my profession as a teacher, I nurture an interest in reading by sharing relevant reading material with my students.

Writing

As a teacher, I provide ample opportunities for my students to practice their writing skills. I encourage them to commit their ideas in writing. This activity allows students to organize their thoughts. It also prompts learners to think about using target vocabulary in context.

Awesome tutor!

Suzanne was great with my daughter. She really helped her get caught up to where she needed to be. She helped her get started on a project that she ended up making a 98 on. She was very patient. My daughter felt like she really took the time to help her understand. Thanks Suzanne!
