I am a well rounded, open minded individual with an international background. My native language is English, but I am also fluent in German and proficient in French. I have lived in Europe, the United States, and the Caribbean. I graduated from American University in Washington DC with a double major in International Development and Economics. I am knowledgeable and passionate about many subjects, in particular English (Reading and Writing), German, French, and the Social Sciences.
I have always been a very academically minded, highly organized and self-motivated individual. I helped home school my younger sister and tutored students throughout high school and college. Although I have not had an official tutoring job in recent years, I have worked with a diverse group of people of all ages and backgrounds as part of my job and personal life. For the past 15 years, I managed a family owned an eco resort and Heritage site in the Caribbean and was actively involved in various educational projects, including academic field schools and skills training. My family also fostered a high school student for the part two years, whom I tutored and helped prepare for exams. She just successfully graduated as one of the top in her class!
As part of my experience living and working abroad, I have always been around people whose first language was not English. I have helped teach and translate on many occasion, and English was always one of my strongest subjects. I feel confident that I would be able to teach English as a second language to children as well as adults.
I am a bi-lingual German and English speaker, and studied French for 6 years, including at the advanced college level. As part of my work in tourism, I have had the opportunity to keep up much of my French language skills. I lived in Germany for 4 years, where I attended a private boarding school, so I am very comfortable with German language and culture.
I find teaching to be a very rewarding and exciting job, and would love the opportunity to help someone successfully master a subject or exam. I recently moved back to North Carolina permanently and my schedule is very flexible. I do not own my own transportation, but have access to a vehicle. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
