I am an educator with 15 years of experience. I have taught elementary and middle school for 5 years, and taught hybrid high school/university classes for another 10 years. I have taught history, literature, Japanese, ESL, reading/writing and research.

Very few students lack the ability to excel. Most students simply lack the skillset. I enjoy working with students one-on-one to teach that skillset, and then tailor an education to my student’s needs. As someone who struggles with dyslexia and ADHD, I am aware of the need for novel approaches and compassion in education.

My skillset:
History and Social Studies:
I am passionate about history. I have taught history for 10 years to high school and university students. I will help to make history a grand story--and help with basic study skills and writing. While my PhD qualifies me in many senses, I think that my willingness to support my students stands out. I know what it is like to struggle.
I have taught Global, Modern, and Asian history to high school and university students for 10 years. I am also highly qualified in American History. I am familiar with AP history and the construction of that test.

Japanese:
I lived in Japan for about 7 years--2 years at universities in Japan learning the language. I have studied Japanese on a graduate level. I have taught Introductory Japanese on a university level, and I have taught small classes online for beginners.

Reading, Writing, Research, and ESL:
I make extensive use of literature in the classroom, and feel comfortable with literary analysis and tutoring writing. I have designed and taught special study skills classes--focusing on reading strategies, note taking, and writing. I also have 5 years of ESL teaching experience.

I am highly skilled and have a wide breadth of experience. However, what truly sets me apart is that I care about my students--helping them grow both academically and personally. I sincerely hope that you will contact me.

Excellent AP tutor

Brian is patient, personable, engaging, and meets my student right at her level and is helping her to grow not only her AP history homework understanding but also her note taking skills, study skills, and information processing, analyzing, and summarizing skills. She is already showing improvement and getting more confident. We really appreciate his approach and would highly recommend Brian to anyone.

Knowledgable, kind and patient tutor

He makes history funny and interesting. He showed me how to improve my note taking on American History readings by having me take notes the way I know how to then telling better ways so that way I am able to see the difference. He is very patient and very willing to help.
