About Jim

I recently retired after spending forty happy years teaching Drama, English, Music and Latin up and down the East Coast in independent schools. What I have always enjoyed most about young people is their energy and optimism about the future; my confidence in their ability to make informed choices and positive changes in this world--which will soon be theirs to run-- is as strong now as it ever was.

I have taught 8th and 9th grade English for many decades. As a lover of words and a writer myself of plays, songs and essays, I take writing (and re-writing and re-writing) very seriously. All students can be taught to write better but only if they realize that Writing is actually Thinking captured on paper (or hard drive). Learning to think logically and make a supportable argument come first; grammar and mechanics are important but they are the frame for the picture. I thoroughly enjoy helping students work on both aspects of their unique masterpieces.

I have a major in Theatre and minors in Classics and Education from Florida State University and have extensive graduate coursework in both Theatre and Instrumental and Choral Music Education. In addition to teaching I have also been a choral and band director, stage director, professional actor and musician.

My particular passion is Latin 1; I enjoy teaching beginners very much, making sure they understand from day one that this most amazing and most influential of languages can be learned (and even enjoyed!) without suffering. I never tire of explaining how it works while at the same time I am old-school when it comes to memorization and hard work. I truly believe everyone can learn Latin and that even a single year of Latin will make a lifetime of difference in a student's education.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have taught AP Music Theory twice with students receiving a 4 and 5. I have advanced graduate work in Instrumental Education and have been both a band, pit orchestra and choral conductor. My musical background includes playing piano, pipe organ, trumpet, baritone horn, glass harp and theremin. I have written nine original musicals, several sacred choral works and a variety of satirical and novelty songs. I am most interested in tutoring good classical piano players on how to add improvisation with chords to their piano skills and use a Fake Book.

English

I have taught 8th and 9th grade English for many years and am recently retired.

Public Speaking

I have a BA in Theatre Education, have taught Acting, Directing, Speech to middle and high school students for 40 years. I am an experienced actor of over 100 plays including summer stock and professional children's theatre companies. I have coached students on monologues and audition pieces. By directing more than 100 plays and musicals with students I have taught the basics of public speaking both formally and informally all my teaching life.

Theater

I have a BA in Theatre Education from Florida State University, and have taught middle and high school drama for forty years. I have graduate coursework in Creative Dramatics and Children's Theatre as well as professional acting experience performing for schools. I am also a trained mime and have conducted mime and juggling workshops for over a thousand students. I have directed over 100 plays and musicals with students and have taught courses in Acting, Directing, Stagecraft and Musical Theatre. I have also written nine original musicals. I have acted in over 100 plays myself including summer stock and professional touring companies.
