About Paul

I taught in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg (NC) system at Garinger High School for two years, taught one semester of seminary as a visiting instructor, and homeschooled my two kids through middle school, where they finished a year ahead of their age peers. I spent about half my own high-school and undergraduate years teaching others, usually in math and reading. Currently, I am a studio artist and give lessons.

Teaching has always been a part of how I set my schedule, and I can't imagine going long without it. Few things match that "light-bulb" moment, when when fear and frustration slip away to be replaced by that confidence which comes with mastery or understanding. I had good teachers myself; sometimes they made the difference between passing and excelling; sometimes, between failing and passing.

Practice and patience. I just finished teaching two middle-schoolers a year of algebra, and they placed in the 90th percentile on a national skills test. They had different learning styles and ability levels.

I have read Latin since the eighth grade and have had it taught to me in different ways. I can match up what works with individual students.I have a Master's in Theology and I have read the New Testament in Greek.

I studied a bunch of European history in college, from Greece on up; I have taught it to elementary and middle schoolers, and I read widely in it. I know the major topics and schools of thought in the discipline.

I am a classically trained artist and have taught children and adults to draw. I teach hobbyists and working artists. I am skilled in all drawing media and can give you instruction in more skills--many long forgotten by most artists--than anyone else you'll find.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I taught Algebra in the public school system in North Carolina and at St Augustine's school in the same state.

I have likewise taught English, from basic literacy through 12th-grade honors level.

Bible Studies

I have a Master's in Theological Studies from Duke University Divinity school. Further, I have a decade's experience in preparing and delivering weekly sermons and weekly adult Sunday School lessons. I have written a catechism and taught Church history and Biblical Studies to seminarians.

Drawing

I make part of my living by producing and selling realist fine art and teaching art. I studied classical drawing and oil painting for several years and already pass on the knowledge and skills I have learned. I have taught children and adults drawing and painting, and many of my students are professional artists who seek me out in order to expand their skill sets.
