About Shane

I have a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. I took most of the education courses to be a teacher and I passed the Praxis exam.

I graduated in 2009 with my bachelor's degree in English, but without a teacher certification. Although I did not complete the extra semester of student teaching, due to the economic conditions for teachers in NC, I love helping others. While attending school, I earned an A in linguistics from an accredited university. I understand that everyone has an accent, it's not just a southern thing. Knowing the phonetic alphabet allows one to sound out words.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

With all the different aspects of English I studied in college, I have a great deal of knowledge under my belt. I am very well read and studied in literature and enjoy helping others understand the things they read. I am skilled in writing (although not published). I can proofread a paper, and tear it to pieces with both positive and negative criticism. I pulled off an A in Linguistics and my writing courses.. As far as speech goes. I can help with linguistics.

Grammar

One of my biggest pet peeves is grammar and spelling. I absolutely look down upon no one who uses bad grammar. The words you, your, and you're are commonly misused and I feel that if a teacher had taken the time to explain the differences many folks would not be confused. Diagramming sentences is no fun, but it does have a purpose. I however would never teach that. I'll get students to learn the same concept in a better way.

Literature

A good English teacher is not one who lectures 90% of the time or assigns busy work. A good English teacher is one who gets the class involved in discussions about what they have read and gives the students the freedom to say what they got out of the assigned reading and why they interpreted it that way. There is nothing wrong with having an upbeat discussion about a Shakespeare play. What is wrong is when the teacher assigns the reading and then gives a test on it. Papers are for literature courses. Papers give students the chance to express exactly what they got out of the work.
I have always had an understanding and appreciation for literature. This understanding and appreciation was much intensified by my majoring in English Lit and Writing in college. I learned how to read in between the lines and understand underlying meanings in works by great writers such as Faulkner, Fitzgerald, and Hawthorne, to name a few. I have a crush on the classics and will always love reading and analyzing young adult literature.

Speech

I have a bachelor's degree in English. I earned an A in linguistics from an accredited university. I understand that everyone has an accent, it's not just a southern thing. Knowing the phonetic alphabet allows one to sound out words.

Writing

As an English major I obviously had to write hundreds of papers over my 4 year career. My first actual writing course was Writing for Teachers. The teacher was a little retired lady and very tough. When I would submit a paper I would usually get it back in a couple of days. Each paragraph would have more of here handwriting than what I had actually typed. Both positive and negative criticism. Some folks would cry when they got their papers back. I loved the criticism. I learned so much from Dr. B. I was sure to take her for my other writing courses and for linguistics. I earned A's in all of her classes.
