I have been involved in education for thirty seven years, either as a teacher or as a school headmaster. I have taught middle school social studies and literature. I also taught American and world histories, civics, cultural anthropology, social entrepreneurship, American and world literatures, emergent cosmology, as well as writing at the secondary level. I can help you improve your understanding and mastery of these subjects, or pass a test in these subjects.
I teach for understanding and application of knowledge. To just memorize facts can lead to a state of such abstraction that you can be left with deep discontent (boredom) and lack of personal relevance (Why do I have to study this?). Learning comes best when it is arrived at through exploring content within a clear contextual framework. Context (why things happened the way they did) provides comprehension and meaning to any subject. It also can support solving real world problems. I believe in writing well. No matter what subject is being studied, writing is a wonderful way to learn how to demonstrate your understanding. I also believe in oral demonstration of your knowledge. Sometimes it is both easier and more powerful to simply state what you know rather than write about it. I believe there are many different ways people. Not everyone processes information the same way! We will find out how you learn best – and apply that approach.
I will not only teach you the subject you are interested in learning but also will share with you life-long learning skills while you are working on that subject. Learning skills are as important as the subjects customarily taught in school and will help you successfully navigate the work at hand as well as whatever the future will bring. I am interested in helping you become a better learner while we apply our energy to improve in the specific subject you are presently concerned about.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
