Virginia Commonwealth University (Art History Studio)
I've had the joy and challenge of being a graphic designer for the past 25 years. Although my college degree and studies were in art history and painting and printmaking, I found after graduation that I was much more interested in commercial art. It was a very good move. I went back to school and my first job was with a large regional advertising agency and that's where the real education began.
I have worked for agencies, design studios, a children's book publisher, myself, and I taught graphic design at the community college in Utah for six years. That is where my love of teaching began. I soon realized what an honor it was to have my class chosen.
My husband and I started a family at that point and we returned to North Carolina where I continued to work in design on my own. Eventually I pursued marketing in general and now I work as a marketing manager for a global manufacture.
But I haven't lost my love for teaching and once I became a parent, I quickly loved sharing my passion with someone who is just realizing theirs. When my children were young I always enjoyed the age when students were learning about careers.
The three foundation software programs for graphic design are Adobe Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. If you are interested in an introduction and basic skills of these programs I would love to work with you. I can also give you a good foundation in basic design principles and applications. Learn what a graphic designer needs to know to make great designs.
I will come to your home one evening every other week to work with you at your computer. On the weeks in between I will look at your work and send back suggestions and instructions. You will learn by doing. Right away you will be able to make designs that you can use. I've had the joy and challenge of being a graphic designer for the past 25 years. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
