About Debra

Bio

I have a JD from Loyola Law School and a degree in History and Poli Sci from University of Montana. For the past 10 years, I have tutored students in reading and math. I started working in a NC public elementary school in 2008, first in the Headstart Program and later in the Title I Department. I especially love working with students one-on-one or in small groups where I can really discover their individual strengths, weaknesses and learning style.

I started working in a NC public elementary school in 2008, first in the Headstart Program and later in the Title I Department. I especially love working with students one-on-one or in small groups where I can really discover their individual strengths, weaknesses and learning style.

Not every struggling reader needs intensive phonics instruction or focused fluency work. My experience as a Title I reading instructor helped prepare me to identify a student's individual knowledge gaps and tailor lessons to target those specific gaps. Lessons focus more on phonics, fluency or comprehension as needed for each student.

I worked in Title I for three years before being trained in Orton-Gillingham.

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

Even before I started working in the elementary school I was a frequent parent volunteer asked to work with students to improve their reading and math skills. For the past 3 years I have worked with fourth grade math students at the school and with students of all elementary grade levels outside of the school. While tutoring I incorporate a variety on multisensory techniques to help students develop their math skills.
Phonics,

Phonics

A major component of the Orton-Gillingham Basic Training is learning about the sounds of the English language and the various ways we have to spell those sounds. Instruction rooted in O-G techniques always seeks to assess a student's mastery of phonics skills and adjust as needed. In addition to O-G, I have been trained in specific reading/phonics programs including Wilson Fundations, Touchphonics, and RAVE-O. Though my work as a Title I reading instructor and a private tutor I have used a variety of assessment tools that allow me to identify a student's specific skill gaps; I can then craft lessons that address those gaps.

ACT English

I have worked with several students on all portions of the ACT, with the exception of Math. This experience has shown me that students often times need a very analytical approach to the test-having an understanding of what each question is testing for enables students to focus on a few test taking strategies that can help with all four sections.

Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

I completed my Orton-Gillingham Basic Level training in July, 2010 and my Advanced Level training the following year. These courses focused on the multisensory techniques developed to teach students with dyslexia and provided essential information about the English language that is often missing from teacher education programs. I taught reading in a public elementary school as a Title 1 reading instructor for 3 years and although I now teach technology in the same public school, I still work with struggling students before and after school. For the past 5 years my emphasis as a private tutor has been working with students with dyslexia, but I have also worked with students on general study skills.

Very knowledgeable, patient and soft spoken! Great with my son!

Enjoy listening to her teach and encourage my son to try! She’s very organized and has all the material she needs in order to begin a lesson plan! She also very flexible and does everything she can to accommodate our needs! Can’t wait to see the progress they’ve made!

Great First Meeting

Debra met with us today for the first time. My son is in third grade and recently diagnosed with dyslexia. He also has ADHD. Debra is very pleasant and friendly!! She did some testing with him to determine where he needs the most help initially. He was very comfortable working with her and told me he had fun! That is close to miraculous considering he is normally very timid around new people and doesn't like doing any "homework"! We are looking forward to our future sessions. I believe they will be very beneficial to his learning. Hopefully he will develope more confidence and a true love of reading!
