Lafayette Colege (English)
In college, in addition to earning a dual Art and English B.A. degree, my minor was education, and I obtained a teaching certification. My school's program was unique in that it required us to work as both teacher and teacher assistant at all levels of the educational system. I worked with preschools in a Head Start program, middle schoolers, and high schoolers. I have to say that the youngest learners won a special place in my heart. Some were from underprivileged families, but their sense of wonder, their openness to learning, and their pride in mastering even the smallest skills never ceased to amaze me.
After having worked in corporate America as a graphic artist for many years, I was blessed to be able to be a stay-at-home for the past five.
My daughter is ten now, and I am returning to work. For two years, I volunteered at her school as a Room Mom, organizing class parties, chaperoning on field trips, doing classroom art projects, and offering a helping hand to the teacher. Being a Room Mom was a great opportunity to get to know the school, the kids, and other parents.
In August, I will be working as a preschool teaching assistant in the mornings. My afternoons will be open to tutoring.
I joined Buncombe County's Library's Preschool Outreach Program (POP) where volunteers are paired with a local area preschool. At Roots and Wings Visual Arts Preschool I read library books, lead songs and games, and bring a new animal friend (puppet) for the kids to meet each time.
A bit about me: My passions are fiction writing, reading, art, and nature. I'm very creative, love arts and crafts, and enjoy teaching children those hands-on skills. I am member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, participate in conferences and critique groups. I wrote a column for their Carolinas newsletter.
I will be taking the "early chilhood credentials" course in the Fall. Please know that my teaching certification for secondary education is no longer active, as I am focusing on early childhood education.
I believe that giving a child one-on-one support, encouragement, and guiding him through the lesson step by step, can make him a more confident student. I feel that I would be most effective working with Pre-K through grade 4 students. In college, in addition to earning a dual Art and English B.A. degree, my minor was education, and I obtained a teaching certification. My school's program was unique in that it required us to work as both teacher and teacher assistant at
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In college I was a dual English and Art major, and took an Education minor, completing the required classes for all three. I received my B.A. and a teaching certification. To obtain certification my college required that I intern and assist at all levels of the public school system. I worked with preschoolers in a Head Start program, with middle schoolers, and taught high school English for a semester.
After moving to Asheville, I was a hands-on Room Mom at my daughter's school for 2 years (pre-K and K). I assisted the teachers, organized class parties, chaperoned on field trips, and (my favorite activity), did arts & crafts with the kids.
I am a member of Buncombe County Library's Preschool Outreach Program (POP), where I read library books to preschooler groups, sing songs, and play games. I also bring animal puppets that I use as teaching tools. They love it! In the Fall I will be receiving my early childhood education certificate. At that time I may be working as an assistant in a preschool (job offer pending).
In college I was a dual studio art and English major, having completed the requirements for both majors (Dean's List grades). I also studied art history. I had an education minor and received my teaching certification. My father is a senior professor at the Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and he gave me lessons. I have always been an artist and have worked in many paint media: watercolor, acrylics, gouache. I also draw, make arts & crafts and jewelry.
