Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I have worked with children on the Autism spectrum in the home and school environments for 4 years. I am familiar with PBA (positive behavior analysis) methods and ABA (applied behavioral analysis) methodologies.

I am interested in assisting with academic, sensory, social-emotional and self help/life skills within the Autistic population.

I am fluent in sign language and cued speech which assist non-verbal or limited verbal children.

I can also assist parents in the IEP and educational process.

I look forward to working with you!

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a teacher of elementary students in public, private, charter and homeschool environments for 16 years.

ESL/ESOL

I have many years of experience teaching English language learners one-on-one and in small groups. I use a variety of techniques for speaking and listening skills. I can also help with reading and writing in English. We can work on job-specific vocabulary as well. I look forward to learning what your goals are. I will design a personalized lesson each time we meet.

Grammar

I have many years of experience teaching English grammar, spelling and punctuation to native and non-native English speakers. I own many materials to support learning these skills and I strive to make the lessons as simple and fun as possible.

Hard Of Hearing

I have been a teacher of children with hearing impairments for 7 years in a variety of school settings. I can communicate using sign language, cued speech, and I am familiar with oral methodologies.

I would love to assist with literacy and communication goals as well as academics.

I am able to assist parents with questions regarding the IEP process and educational options and programs.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Phonics

I have taught phonics as part of whole language and literacy programs to typically developing and special needs students for 16 years. I have experience tailoring a phonics curriculum to meet the needs of individual students.

Reading

I have many years of experience as a reading teacher and am a literacy specialist. I have studied a variety of approaches including Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, Lindamood-Bell and other multisensory techniques. I am fluent in sign language and cued speech. I have all of the materials needed to create effective individualized lessons for you or your child.

Sign Language

My BS degree is in SpEd-DHH and I have used sign language to communicate with my students and their families for over 12 years. I have been a teacher of American Sign Language at the high school level for hearing students who wish to use ASL as their foreign language for college admission.

I am dedicated to teaching ASL and Deaf culture to a variety of students whether they are hearing, hearing impaired, or deaf.

Special Needs

I have taught in cross categorical classrooms for 4 years. My students have been classified as deaf/hearing impaired, cognitive delay, speech/language delay, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Learning Disordered, ADHD, ED, BD, etc.

I have created and modified curriculum to fit IEP goals and I have changed my method of instruction to meet individual goals of the students I work with.

My BS degree is in special education. I have been part of MET and IEP teams and I am able to assist parents through these educational processes.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Study Skills

I have taught study skills to typically developing students and special needs students for 16 total years. Time management and materials management can be taught using visual schedules, color coding, an alarm, visual cues, clear practices and modeling of behaviors that demonstrate organization and study skills- how to skim a chapter, what bold words mean, creating useful study materials, organization of materials, time management, etc. These skills can appear equally unimportant or overwhelming to a student who has not yet learned study skills. I can teach these skills to students of a variety of needs, learning styles, and interest levels and I will make it fun.
